The Seeds of Dissension
Midnight day 1

Please inform General Gobi again that all of my forward units are ready to move. We have been ready for 12 hours now. My scouts have reported no opposition at all, we can take complete control of Sacramento in one hour, trapping a majority of the population that hasn't fled yet. Over!” You could clearly hear the frustration in General Jiu Chens voice he wasn't trying to hide it this time.
General Zhi Peng came back with his own retort, “As I informed you last hour General Chen, General Gobi has ordered a full stop in any movements to the east. The 9th Corp to your south hasn't finished unloading their heavy units. And until they do and get on line with your 25th Corp you are at a full stop. Over!”
There is no American forces to my front, and none to the north or south of me. If I can take Sacramento that will put a stop to the American refugees fleeing up I-80. Once that road is clear I can be in Nevada in 24 hours. Why aren't we sticking to the original battle plans that the Khan issued to us? Over!”
You could hear the frustration in Zhi's voice as he answered over the radio.”I may be the 10th Army Executive Officer, but I haven't a clue as to why you were ordered to stop. General Gobi has said let as many American flee that want to. As that will be less civilians that we have to worry about, less mouths clamoring for food later on. Less trouble makers in and among our rear elements. Or maybe the Field Marshall fears a trap, I really don't know. Over!”
That makes no sense, the Civilians pose very little threat, and their presences insures us that the American Military will be very picky with their target selection when they attack us. And there are no major American Army unit anywhere around, there are a few small scattered pockets of the National Guard and that is all. Over!”
I know that, but I'm like you, I follow the orders of our commander, as he was picked for this mission by the Khan himself! Over!”
General Chen knew he was getting no where and just replied with, “Copied, out.”
Turning to his Aide-die-Camp and looking at the large map board he then said, “We are to wait for orders, our main units are to continue to hold in place. But go ahead, inform the Division Commanders to keep pushing their scout units forward. If they meet any resistance they can be reinforced with up to a Brigade size force to neutralize the enemy. From there the scouts can be deployed forward again.”
Sir, you know that General Gobi will consider this as disobeying his orders.”
I can handle that, we were ordered to stop and to set up a defensive perimeter as per our SOP, we have done that. And the Army SOP also states for us to patrol in the direction of the enemy, to make sure we are not about to be attacked. And that is what we are doing. Making sure there are no enemy forces within reach of the Corp front. He might get up set with me, so be it. I'm doing what my orders tell me to do, to protect my command.”
Looking at the details from the latest aerial photos of his supply chain that stretched all the way back to San Francisco he had to smile. It looked like one of the photos they had seen during their briefings when they first got their orders a year ago. Typical California highway grid-lock. Bumper to bumper traffic of refrigerated semi-trailers, buses, delivery vans, car haulers and of course more semi-trailers with covered flat beds, and shipping containers.
All of them were cleverly disguised trucks hauling artillery, missile launchers, troops, stores and spare equipment. Even the drivers were dressed like civilians and the same with the few passengers that might be seen from a side view satellite scan. If the American Air Force thought about an airstrike on the few Chinese Army vehicles that were among this traffic they wouldn't do it for fear of killing their own people.
At least part of the original invasion plan was working out, the deception part at least. General Chen still couldn't figure out why he was ordered to stop. The over-all plan called for them to advance faster then the populace could flee. Not so much to be held as captives or used as human shields, but for a bargaining chip later if needed.
He could see the wisdom of not having so many of them around that food might become an issue. And he understood that some of them might become a security issue later, especially with so many of them being veterans from Iraq. Even if they caused trouble we could then pick up their families, and threaten them, to force their surrender.
Besides we have almost all of the population around the bay trapped with no place to go....
he shudders when another idea comes to mind. Is this some plan he wasn't privy to, allowing the Jihad Army to terrorize these people?
If that is so, the Americans will want more then vengeance, unless we defeat them completely. He shakes his head no, five million Chinese won’t be enough to do that. There must be other plans, politics will be involved, and that was not his worry.

Addressing the Kansas Militia Officers and NCO's
0600 hrs. D-day plus 1, CTZ
Men and women of the 1st Brigade Kansas Militia, I’m glad to see you responded so well to my call, and I want to thank you for making the decision to commit before the state legislation has reconvened and call’s us to duty. Even though the Lt. Governor has asked us to muster Monday morning, he didn’t know if he had the authority to make it an order. I know it takes a lot of courage to leave your family and head to WAR even when you know your doing the right thing, and before others or even the politicians can act.”
General Greene informed me Saturday morning that America is in great peril.”
Some one in the group said, “That’s and understatement,” and quiet a few people vocally agreed.
Dan held up his hand to quiet the Militia, when order was restored he told them, “Please ladies and gentlemen if we are to get anywhere fast in our meetings we must have discipline and order, if you wish to address the assemble raise a hand to be recognized. Otherwise keep your opinions quiet and to yourself, thank you.
Now as I started to say, if our military forces that are moving as fast as possible into battle out west can hold up the invaders for a few months we just might stand a chance. The General said we could expect at the most three months of training before we are deployed into battle. If that is all that we get then we must make every minuet we have here at Fort Riley count, to do any less we will fail those who follow us.”
Pausing for a second Dan then added, “Before we get started the Padre has something to say to us all, Major Harvey you have the floor.”
Thank you sir, gentlemen and ladies I or one of the assistant pastors will be holding a short fifteen minuet service at the top of every hour and on the half/ hour starting at 0700 and continue until 1300 hours today any and all are welcome to join in. I know we are all going to be busy, very busy but in these hours of turmoil we must not forget GOD, he has not and will not forget us. That is his promise to us of eternal life, bare with me for a minuet as I read from Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8

One of our countries greatest Generals said, ’In all my perplexities and distresses, the Bible has never failed to give me light and strength.’ That quote was by Robert E. Lee, he was a very religious man and well read, respected by his men and the Union forces he faced. That truth he spoke of hasn’t changed ‘The Bible will give the light and the strength, all you have to do is open read, and understand.”
As the old 60's saying goes, Keep on trucking, we will weather this storm and God will be with us always, in the troubled days ahead. In II Corinthians 4:8-9, we are reassured of God’s presences ‘We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.’ In that one verse we are reminded that God is there for us, and all we have to do is seek him out and he will comfort us. So I ask each of you if you can’t make one of the services offered today, or to at least take a few minuets to read a few lines from the Bible. Just open it to any page and read for a minuet or two, it will help to bring comfort and peace of mind.”
One other thing I do ask of you, not to hate our enemies no matter what evil he does; rather pity them and their actions for they will suffer in hell for what they do to innocents. Hate breeds anger, and anger manages everything badly. Anger and hate will do more damage then all of the reasons that aroused them, they make for rash decisions and will lead to ruin more often then not. A moment of hate and anger will happen, that is human nature, but to dwell on either is the devil speaking to you. Don’t listen and never let either control you, we must control our passions or they will control us. Please pray for all the people in the war zones that they are able to stay safe and protected. Now every one stand up please, as we all recite the Lords Prayer.”

Lifting he head he then said, “My Friends, in the coming months we will face trials and tribulations. We will be witness to unimaginable horrors, just remember that the Lord will always be with you. Thank you, please take a seat gentlemen and ladies, Dan, uh sorry sir old habits die hard, Colonel thank you for giving me a moment.”
Dan walked over to the podium and shook Maj. Harvey’s hand, thanking him, then turned to the Militia members and said. “When the Lt. Governor returned my call yesterday morning, and gave me verbal conformation to go ahead and assemble our men, he said he’s positive the house and senate will pass the proposed bill as soon as a quorum can be gathered some time today. He also said that no later then Tuesday they will want a complete list of all our personnel and the rank they hold within the Brigade. All of our Militia members should then be recognized by the state as a functioning unit at last that is what I hope. And for the Officers that means we will get our commissions approved by the state, all other ranks presently held should be recognized too.”
The Lt. Governor also said that a state bill will be introduced to suspend all interest payments on our home mortgage and car payments. You will still have to pay the principle due, but it should help your families. He said this law would be effective immediately and would last for six months after the war is over. There are federal laws already on the books, but the Kansas bill will have several added provisions that are lacking in the Fed’s. That should give some of you peace of mind so you don’t have to worry about your family’s financial situation, when we are at the front.”
General Greene has asked me to lead our first few meetings until we have at least 85% of our officers and NCO’s present to vote for a Brigade commander, are there any problems with the Generals request?”
Seeing none Dan continued with, “That’s good, we should be able to take that vote at the next meeting as of now we are only seventeen people short of the number needed.”
There are two other provisions that General Greene and I worked out, the first is everyone of us will carry their Militia Photo ID on them at all times, and have it readily available to show when asked by the MP's, ours and the base MP's. New members that haven't been to one of our weapons classes and been checked out as safe will not carry, until their Company CO deems them safe. Only then will they be issued an ID. Company Commanders this is a priority and needs to be done in the first day or 2 when a new man is assigned to your unit. The only exception will be if the new people have their Concealed Weapons Permit, issued by a State agency.”
The second is that all members of the Militia as well as the regular Army personnel on post will be required to be armed at all times, except when doing PT or working where a firearm wouldn't be practicable.
This security concern stems from the overwhelming successful raids that the Rhodesian Military conducted against the Terrorists in their so called safe base Camps in Zambia and Mozambique, in the early part of that war. Where we could attack them and kill them in large numbers, because most of them weren't armed. A terrorist attack right now on a Military post here in America would see lots of our people killed because they aren't armed.” Pointing to the barrel of his FN rifle slung over his back, he continued, “I prefer a rifle as you can see. Just remember that you are responsible for your own security, and those around you.”
Capt Green raised his hand and Dan indicated for him to Speak. “Sir is this Army wide or just here at Fort Riley?”
General Greene told me he would pass on this concern to Washington, but for now it's limited to his Command. And before anyone thinks that was a different War a long time ago, it's lessons are still relevant today. Tactics change but they also stay the same too, it's people without experience that fail to be prepared. I and a lot of other veterans have experience, and we will pass it along as we all learn new stuff at the same time. Our job as leaders is to protect our men the best that we can, and that is what I plan to do! And everyone of you will be taught all that we know, to help keep as many of our people alive and unhurt.”
Seeing no other raised hand he continued, “Now, I want you all to know that we have a lot of work cut out for us people, and the first job is to get this old camp into shape, not just for ourselves and the new people here today. But also for the crush of new recruits that will follow in the weeks and months to come.”
To move the construction along Captain Alex Fry and a few of his construction people arrived yesterday afternoon. The first thing they did was to conduct a complete inspection on the condition of the buildings and the area. Most of them are sound structures and need only a little repair, but in some places we have a lot of work”
The clean water supply lines as well as the sewage pipes are very inadequate and will need replacing. As far as electrical goes the wiring is poor at best, and the PA system has to be replaced, believe it or not the main control unit has vacuum tubes in it. I would bet even money that it’s the original one from either WWII, or Korea.”
You could hear some of the people present laugh as he continued, “The plumbing in a few buildings has to be completely replaced, and all the mess halls need a major renovation, Lt. Colonel Mason the post engineer officer said yesterday that it will take months of planning and then more waiting in letting the contracts out.”
Lt Col. Red Stoddard 4th battalion commander shaking his head in disbelief said, “Stupid, ahh sorry, I’m not knocking the post engineer Dan, but he just doesn’t get it does he. And I guess there are going to be a lot like him, that can’t see that the United States doesn’t have months, I guess we could live out of tents and our RV’s for a week or two?”
Sorry Red, that’s not acceptable either, last evening I got word to General Greene, he said we are in charge here, to do what is necessary and do it in the next two or three days. Since I know we have a brigade of can-do people, we can and will re-make this camp, fit to occupy.”
Anyway to make a long story short Capt. Fry called in his three architects and by using the old blue prints of the buildings and grounds, they came up with plans for a quick, efficient remodel. They completed the design task in a little over two hours by using the software programs in their computers, they have it all worked out, all the supplies needed and our people will help with the manpower he needs. So ladies and gentlemen we will all pitch in and help, the work can and will be completed in three days.”
To get it started, late last night Alex brought in all of his back hoes, trench ditching machines and pipe laying equipment, plus over three mile of three inch, six inch and twelve inch pipe and early this morning they started work down by the west end that leads to the waste treatment plant, laying new sewer lines”
Lt. Aaron Sims, the engineer company XO has started on the north side and is going to be laying new pipe for the clean water supply. And our plumbers with some of our other men acting as laborers have started the tearing out of old showers and toilets in six buildings. If you are in charge of one of these details make a complete list of everything that you tear out, nothing is to be thrown away as it’s Army property and I don’t want any charges raised that we are stealing anything.”
I know a few of you are contractors or building material suppliers and as soon as we are finished with this meeting please see Alex, he has made up several list of supplies that we need today. Such as wiring, light switches and fixtures, toilets, tables and kitchen fixtures and more. Compare notes in what you can supply, so that we don’t have any duplication, then call your work place or someone at home to start collecting and to transport it today. Make sure to keep a complete detailed list of all that you provide and give a copy to the 1st. Battalions S4, and he will submit all cost for reimbursement. Gen. Greene has assured me you should get your money. I know I don’t have to ask you too give your lowest price, but do cover you’re cost, every one of you are patriots and I don’t expect you need reminding of that.”
If you need transportation help see Major Chad Pogillis the 2nd. Bn. S-3, he said his freight company and its three terminals around the state has trucks that will go around and pick up for us.”
For you guys who live further out, the manager of T-Oil, that’s one of Bucks companies, has offered several of his transport aircraft to fetch the stuff. He said before the meeting is over there will be two of his planes at the airfield ready to take anyone back home if needed, that will save over half a days drive for some of you just to get there. Once again coordinate all this with Major Pogillis, so we have a handle on what is getting accomplished.”
Any questions, none good. Now the second item we need to talk about is bringing us up to full strength. In the next two day’s we are going to see a lot of new people, and out of these new people coming in I want us to be very picky and get the best people to flesh out our units needed manpower. With out guidance from the army or the state I think we should stay with our old plan of four infantry battalions, the mixed Air, armor and mech battalion, and the brigade HQ that’s around a five thousand five hundred man unit, so unless Gen. Greene has difference ideas, we work to our plans of a completely independent brigade,” as Dan finished the senior officers and NCOs nodded their heads in agreement.
That’s why I asked for the Platoon and 1st. Sgts. to stay in the camp while we had this meeting, they’re to organize and separate the newbie's that are arriving, getting all of these new people to fill out a questionnaire on previous military experience and or occupational skills. Except for the officer slots we are leaving it up to the Battalion CSM’s to place them in our units or to start organize them into another separate unit. I trust them to do what is right without interference from us the Officers, if you have a friend in the new people, tell your CSM and that will be taken into consideration, just remember that unit needs outstrips all other considerations.”
Next item, you all know Colonel Clark the unit surgeon, his people will start giving physicals for everyone later this morning. And I mean everyone, that’s including me too guys.”
We have to know where each man is starting from so we can work on getting everyone up to standard, and I’ll use my self as an example. Yesterday morning at 4 AM I weighed 200 pounds, that’s twenty pounds over what is standard for my height and age, and in being fit for combat. I will lose that twenty pounds plus, in the next month just from the increased physical conditioning our training will now demand, and through a more balanced diet. So no soda pop or chips for me it’s back to a better diet, one I should have been on the last few years.”
Most of us can expect to be sore from using muscles that haven’t been exercised for the last few years and in being tired to the bone. In two weeks or so the sore muscles will be gone and the body will start getting in shape, as for bone being tired it only gets worse. So deal with it and learn to adjust, your men will look to you for guidance, so no bitching.”
Colonel Clark said he would have our dietician and the therapy specialists, when they arrive, to give each man or women a rating and from that a goal that they will have to meet each week. For the people under thirty-five it should be easy, but for us old and our older members..”
There were several jeers from the older members present like, ‘speak for yourself’ and ‘who are you calling old?’
Dan smiled and held up his hands to regain order, “I said using myself as an example, but Lt. Karen Wong and Lt. Carl Smiley will have the final say along with Colonel Clark’s physical report on each Militia member. He says that his team can and will have our unit completely checked out by 1800 hours tomorrow evening, that’s not counting of course the blood testing results and any people that need special screenings, as this may be necessary for some of us. Again we will leave that up to our chief Surgeon and his people. As you can see on page two of today’s schedule, in one hour I will be in line with my command team for our physicals. So please have your people that are present, on time at the clinic designated for them, any one of your listed people who arrive after 1800 hrs today and all the newbies’ arriving will be checked out tomorrow.”
The next item is rations or meals, I have asked Captain Boa Diem the 1st. Bn. mess Officer to be the one in charge of all our mess facilities, how do we stand on food Capt Diem?”
Boa stood up and said, “I want to thank the other Battalions for having copied our alert call up and the request that everyone arrive with at least two weeks worth of food, and in seeing that everyone had the same items for their meals. This amount of food will last us easily for the next week including all the people who show up that are not part of our Militia unit, and for the few members who couldn’t afford to donate.”
We have arraigned for fresh milk, eggs, vegetables and fruit to supplement our dry and canned rations until the army supply system can kick in. To pay for this extra food I will collect one dollar a day from all who eat at our mess halls for the next few weeks until we deploy. Any money extra will be used to build up a sizable stockpile of dried beans and rice. I would like each battalion to have enough stored food on hand to feed all their man for one month at the very least!”
CSM Cody wolf raised hi hand and asked, “Sir do you mean rations in addition to what each man is suppose to have in his level three gear?”
Shaking his head yes Boa agreed, “Yes Sgt. Major in addition to. When and where we deploy food may be short. America lost the battle of Bataan because they were starved into surrender, I do not want to see our people in that same predicament,” then he sat back down.
Dan stood up again as he said, “I wish you had picked a different battle for your analogy, but I do see your point Capt Diem, a show of hands if in agreement,” all present raised there hands. “OK we all agree, one thing Boa, if anyone who is in our command or if one of the new people can’t afford the money, don’t make an issue of it, let me know and we will raise the cash through other means.”
I have a couple more things to say and then you will be dismissed back to your commands, our next meeting will start at 1200 hours right before lunch, at that time you can expect more in depth details will be hammered out. When I issued the alert, I asked for ever member to bring 2,000 rounds of ammunition for his weapon, I want each company 1st. Sgt with the supply Sgt’s. to inventory and store this ammo in each company’s supply room. If we are not issued ammo for training on the ranges for a few weeks, we will use this store for zeroing and training. We will keep a record of what is used and replace it when the army supply kicks in.”
Buck is having several of his1919’s and M2’s sent up today so we can get the troops to start training on some support weapons. That means tonight will be the first of many evening classes with hands on training. But before tonight I want as much work as we can get done on these barracks and all of the support buildings during daylight hours.”
Dan pauses for a few seconds then says, “As you know we didn’t start this fight, in fact America has tried it’s hardest to avoid it. My father taught me to never hit anyone first; but, if they hit you first, hit them back immediately and twice as hard! If they get up to continue the fight, then you have to lay into them with all your might, that way when you win your opponent will know he picked on the wrong man. And this one fight will stand as a lesson to other bullies to give you a wide berth, don’t mess with him because he fights to win.”
Germany and Japan learned that lesson the hard way in the 1940’s, our fathers and grand fathers gave it to them good. But then we forgot, America forgot and didn’t fight to win in the early 50’s in Korea and then through the 60’s and early 70’s in Vietnam, then the 1990’s in Gulf War I, and the following disaster in Somalia. ”
If we had fought to win those three wars, and the separate missions that followed, the Chinese wouldn’t have launched the war to conquer Taiwan, or the invasion of our west coast.”
We have to steel our hearts for the task ahead, that we are in this fight until victory is achieved. And we must demand a clear-cut victory, so everyone must write home and make sure that the families there keep the politicians in line.”
All of the fighting skills the veterans among us have learned in past wars must now be tempered with new skills, not just new technology but in how we use that technology too. We have to help those who have never seen war to prepare and train and learn to use new tools at the same time. Courage and innovation, plus deception and good old marksmanship coupled with our can-do attitude and the drive to endure all hardships and above all, at all times remain flexible. To adapt to all changes good, bad, or otherwise and continue on until victory is our only chance.”
Dan again paused for a few seconds letting the militia reflect, then he said, “Now for a little joke to help lighten up the mood, I copied this back in Jan. of 05 off the AWRM site, from a guy who goes by Huass, it’s titled, ‘ONE NATION UNDER GOD’ I have to read it as it is quiet long.”
A college professor, an avowed Atheist, was giving a lecture to his class.
He shocked several of his students when he flatly stated that there is no
God, that the expression, ‘One Nation Under God’, was unconstitutional, and
further, he was going to prove there is no God.
Addressing the ceiling he shouted: ‘God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this
platform. I'll give you 5 minutes!’
The lecture room fell silent. You could have heard a pin fall, two minutes went by.
Again he taunted God, saying, ‘Here I am, God. I'm still waiting, you have three minuets.’
His countdown got down to the last minute when a Marine just
released from active duty and newly registered in the class walked up to
the professor, hit him full force in the face, and sent him ass over
heals from his lofty platform.
The professor was out cold! At first the students were shocked and
babbled in confusion.
The young Marine took a seat in the front row and sat silent.
The class fell silent...waiting.
Eventually, the professor came to, shaken.
He looked at the young Marine in the front row. And when he regained his
senses and could speak he yelled, ‘What in hell is the matter with you? Why did
you do that?’
The Marine shrugged his shoulders and said as a fact,
God was busy. He sent me, as he then shouted
GOD BLESS AMERICA.”

The Militia Officers, all laughed, and it was a good laugh too. As they all needed to release the nervous tension that had been building since they got the alert call early Saturday morning, just a little over thirty hours ago.
The reason I told you the joke and got you to laugh is because we all know we are the ones who have to stand up and be counted to do what is right, just like that young Marine in the joke.”
And it is up to all of us to do the right thing again, same as when we joined the Militia, even when others just sit there intimidated by the people in authority.”
We all know our elected leaders who were wrong to ignore their oath of office and their Constitutional duty, in failing to see that the Militia was equipped and trained. Well that was two days ago, the world has changed since then.”
With a grim determined look he said, “My fellow Militia friends as I said, this is not something we wanted, this War, yet we accept it as a reality, and a sad truth.”
Kind of hard to ignore when it’s our back yard Dan,” chuckled Lt. Col. Wes Palmer the third Battalion commander. They all laughed again, a nervous laugh reflecting the grave situation the country was in.
Dan asks a rhetorical question, “If not us, then who or whom?”

We don’t have the luxury of time that we did in WWII. As we all know the foreign enemy is in our country right now killing Americans, for years we have been talking about standing up for our rights against a domestic enemy. Now its time to face the foreign enemy, as we all swore the oath when we each joined. And I quote from our by-laws.”
I (name), do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the State of Kansas, and the Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies, both foreign and domestic’ and I will bear truth faith and allegiance to the same; that I will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me, for conscience sake; so help me God.”
I know everyone one of you will uphold that oath, as we are all Patriots.”
Another saying a little more serious from the AWRM site, this one by 7.62 PK and I quote;
'In combat the soldiers around me are my brothers; in combat I did all that was within my ability to keep them safe and alive, I would and will do the same today.’ I agree with that 100% and that is what we, as the leaders of our men must believe to our last breath. If we don’t, we fail them and ourselves.”
As we all know, the easy fight is now over. The hard fight is coming and before all is said or done, it is going to be very bloody and full of death, maiming, and destruction; maybe our own. Not one of you present here will be spared a look into the mouth of hell.”
I won’t back down from the task I have selected to do and neither can you. So steel yourself for the coming battles and remember that today is the day that we run toward the sound of battle. We have been training the last few years, just in case. We all have good rifles and ammunition and we know how to use them, now is the time that we are needed and we’re ready. John Paul Jones from the War of Independence Navy said ‘give me a fast ship because I intend to go in harms way.’ Today I say give me good riflemen, the enemy will pay dearly for stepping on free soil. Together we can help save lives, who among you will join me?”
As if one they all jumped to their feet and shouted, “I will.”
That’s good, because we must all remember when good men do nothing evil reigns. A lot is at risk to do nothing, and you and I understood that because our decision was made a long time ago; we will do what is necessary, just by your being here proves that.”
Now we have to prove ourselves ladies and gentlemen, as the old saying goes, either Lead, Follow or Get out of the way. Well it’s time to lead, any questions? None… good, it’s almost 0630 pick up your work assignments as you leave, again we will have a quick meeting at 1200 hours and then the last one of the day at 2000 hours, you’re dismissed.”

Gary laughed, “Zinnias, don’t you know that guy is a little weird, everyone inside knows he’s a cold bloodied killer, a contract hit man. The State couldn’t pin any murder charges on him, so they got him for weapons violations and unpaid child support.”
It doesn’t matter what he did, he has agreed to convert and lead men, to help our cause.”
Did you read my file, might be a problem if your top guys find out I’m Southern Baptist, that..”
Shut up,” Clarence shouted, “Never use those two words again Southern Baptist. Ayman our commander hates Christians almost as bad as he hates Jews. And of all the Christians he hates them the worst, because of their worldwide missions and baptizing people to Jesus he figures them as our biggest threat.”
OK, OK don’t get riled. If I were to say no, I can go back to my cell and sit this one out, right?”
Clearance smiled a weak smile and shook his head no, “You are either with us or you will die a sudden death.” Holding both hands out palms up he said, “Door one leads to glory for Allah and true peace. Door number two leads down to the eternal fires of hell and damnation. So its either Heaven or Hell Gary, but it is your choice!”
If I choose Heaven Clarence, can I help talk to the Cons especially men with prior service? I was a recruiter two years before I got out, if we are going to make an Army we will need a lot of sergeants and corporals. There are too many yard birds in here that joined up but got washed out before they finished basic training, a lot of them will be undesirables, for a lot of reasons. We also need a lot of the gang members, they know how to take orders and to do what they are told to do.”
That would be acceptable, Major Zinnias made the same suggestion. If we can find five or six more men like the two of you this effort at winning converts would go faster. Kaliad our General wants results now, how long would it take to form a division or two of cons?”
With three or four hundred Sergeants six months maybe, but we would need a lot of cons, almost double of the number you want to end up with. We will have to be ruthless in dealing with discipline problems thought, these guys aren’t good followers.”
One or two men having their heads cut off or being burnt alive for all to see, would solve most men’s rebellious spirit,” Clarence said.
Gary shuddered at the thought of watching some poor fool’s head getting cut off; as he nodded his head in agreement, he didn’t say ‘that works for some but not all of us.’ “OK I’m in.”

1200 hours CTZ meeting,
The two sandwiches and bottle of water at each setting are for you ladies and gentleman, there isn’t a whole lot of time so you can eat as we discuss items on the agenda. Now the first things I want to go through covers general information, i.e., toward the last of this meeting we will get to the election of a Brigade Commander the supporting staff and then some of the training we will be doing.”
As I said in this mornings meeting Buck’s people shipped some of his M2’s and M1919M4’s from the warehouse in Hutchinson this morning, for those who don’t know, they are the Browning fifty calibers and thirty caliber machineguns in 7.62 NATO, and they arrived over an hour ago. There are twenty-two M2’s and forty-five 1919’s, the training wing has set up a schedule by companies for tonight and everyone but the engineering teams and people assisting them who are working on the buildings and sewers, will start evening classes. They will have evening classes every night on these weapons until the last man and women is trained and qualified. I know the 1919’s are not your standard army weapons any more, but then will be on the majority of our combat vehicles and trucks for support, they maybe old but they are not obsolete, and they sure beat throwing rocks.”
Since we have more people then equipment the training will be two hours for half of the people in each battalion, followed by 2 hours for the other half, read the schedules don’t be late. Besides those two weapons systems Maj. Dix has provided several of the M249’s and the M240’s machine-guns. That means covering two weapon systems in two hours and then two more the next night, a very fast pace to learn how to assemble and trouble shoot but believe me in the next few weeks you will get a lot more hands on time with each weapon. We also have a few 60MM and 81MM mortars for training selected individuals; everyone else will get that training by the end of this weekend. That way when the tubes arrive for each company we will all have the basics covered and later the regular crews will be fully trained and ready to deploy.”
As you can see on the training hand out, in the first few weeks we are going to be pressed for any down time, we have to take six months worth of training and somehow fit it into eight weeks. So everyone must give it everything they have to get the job done, we have to become a trained infantry unit ready for combat. It is a good thing that we have worked in our teams, platoons Company and at Battalion level these last few years and that we are past the basic in tactics, in medical and have our communications systems worked out.”
Everyone one of us has to be an infantry man first and when I say everyone, I mean everyone, all men and women not just the combat troops but every driver, cook and clerk. The medics and the dental assistance’s from our Mash teams, the supply and ammo handlers etc. I won’t list all the job categories but everyone is to be trained and tested as infantry first. If they fail they will be retrained and tested until they pass.”
Major Patrick Harvey, the Brigade Chaplain raised his hand.
Yes Pat,” Dan asked, “do you have a question?”
Standing up the Chaplin said, “Not really a question, but I hope that by your saying everyone, that includes me and my Chaplain assistants? And the reason I ask, after hearing about the machine-gunning of that Fullerton California church congregation on my ham radio earlier today, and then the cold blood execution’s that followed. Excuse me not executions, but murder of the wounded one by one; that has truly shown the utter barbaric nature and pure evil brutality of the invaders and their allies.” He paused letting that thought sink in.
For me, I now know that this enemy will not recognize any non-combatants in this war. Some of you might think it sounds strange for a man of the cloth having to talk about killing. But from my point of view a good shepherd has to help protect his flock. Just driving the wolf away hasn’t worked, and will not work, so that leaves me only one recourse.”
A lot of the men and women present were nodding their heads in agreement.
So when we get three or four more Chaplains one for each of our battalions I will make sure they understand that too. Or I will have to interview several I’m sure before finding ones with the right mindset. For it is past time for the men of cloth to take up the sword and be accounted. A Lutheran by the name of Peter Muhlenberg back in January of 1776 gave a sermon, in it he said. ‘There is a time for all things, a time to preach and a time to pray, but those times have passed away. There is a time to fight. And that time has come.’ We are faced once again with the choice to either fight or to see the end of the noble experiment of men being free from the rule of the self proclaimed elite; I chose to fight,” with that said Chaplin Harvey set down.
I’m not sure where it started, but someone started clapping and all of the Officers and NCO’s present joined in, what the Chaplin had said echoed their own feelings.
Dan stood there thinking, ‘thank the lord for men like these; they understand what we will have to ask of them in the battles to come. And in turn of what they will have to ask from their men. Major Charles Whittlesey, got it right when he said in reference to his men, ‘These men are better then us, they always have been, they always will be.’ (From the movie, The Lost Battalion.)
When the applause died down no one said a thing for a few seconds, not stunned, just letting the words from the Chaplain sink in.
Thank you Chaplain, I hadn’t heard about that incident, and I’m sure there are many more. So people harden your hearts; we are going to have a tidal wave of such reports, and there will be countless more unreported murders that are hidden by the fog of war. But we mustn’t let them distract us from our training, our goal to become an effective unit. I do ask that we as officers and NCOs keep this storm of information our listening and reading about to a minimum, otherwise we will be distracted and not concentrating on what we have to become, A Combat Brigade.”
Cody Wolf the 1st. Battalion Sergeant Major was looking at his friend Doug Peters the training wing first sergeant as he mouthed the words, ‘it’s total war.’
Cody nodded his head in agreement just as his stomach felt like the bottom had fallen out of it, and his mouth went instantly dry.
Captain Tracy Cole from 4th. Bn. was recognized she stood up and said. “I agree with the Chaplain, and what top Peters just said under his breath, this is total war, there will not be any non-combatants recognized by the other side.”
One thing I liked about the Militia when I joined years ago was that all of our training has been geared toward the idea that everyone is a rifleman first, and that all other jobs are second. This may be one of our last meetings where we have a vote, but I want all who join us as Militia; to know that we are all rifleman or in some cases riflewomen first, and that well directed firepower, in the way of aimed shots will make the difference. That is of course hoping that both sides won’t be using Nukes, poison gas, nerve agents or worse.”
With a nervous laugh she said, “I don’t think our civilization would survive, at least not as it is now.”
Major Dix who was representing Major General Greene stood and said, “Col. Marion may I?” Dan said, “Go ahead Major Dix.”
Jim then said, “Later tonight Capt. Andy Whitmen will give you a detailed briefing on the current world wide situation. But the words Total War, are correct.”
I don’t think to many people America knew it but the last two weeks we have been at war. Most Americans, meaning us the average man and women and our leaders didn’t understand what was going on until the Chinese landing on our shores. The first attacks started against the many computer systems of the entire western world at that time, and they have been under constant assault by the enemy since. Using dormant viruses or direct methods by hackers, either shutting down systems or causing massive memory loses or giving new commands to overload sections. Causing the rolling power failures, water systems problems, and really messing up all types of communications in a large part on the East and West coast.”
A computer virus has been found in the newer cell phones that render them useless, thank goodness it only messes up around 7% of all cell phones in use here in America. In the European systems it’s close to 20 % and in Japan its over 50%, so we were lucky in that area.”
These attacks also include the stock market plunge that started at about the same time, and I’m sure you have heard about all of the counterfeit money being spread all over the world, and here in the US. All of these are assaults to destabilize and weaken our western economies and thus our ability and will to fight.”*
If you watched the evening news last week you heard about the strange outbreak of stomach virus’s hitting nine cruise ships, the out breaks in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and at over a dozen major league baseball parks and football stadiums all within one day, coincident or a master plan being followed? As I said, Capt. Whitmen will give a more detailed briefing, but in my opinion the actual invasion following on the heels of these events are just the tip of the master plan, and I’m very positive all are directed by the Kahn and his people,” Major Dix finished and set back down.
Everyone was quiet, soaking in all of this information.
When you add all these events together,” Dan said, “it is easy too see what is going on. One thing though, we can expect many more assaults, all across the board to come faster and faster and from different sources. One of the concepts of modern warfare is sensory overload. To hit your opponent with so much at one time that he cannot function, we have all got to learn to filter out the unimportant and what doesn’t directly effect you as unit commanders. Yes they are all worrisome and might cause problems in re-supply or problems back at home, but you have to concentrate on your duty to win the battle at hand, the staff will worry about their own problems.”
And the people at home will have to be vigilant at all times and expect to be in some part of the fighting. Remember the terrorist attack on the School in southern Russia two years ago, it will happen here in America make no doubt about it. If you sap the will of the people, the armed forces will follow. So when you call home or write make sure you’re loved ones understand, tell them it might not be a bad idea for some of the families to double up for better protection.” Major Dix then sat down.
Dan turned to a first Lieutenant sitting behind him and said, “Stand up Steve I’ll introduce you now.” Then turning back to the meeting he said. “Some of you older hands might remember Steve Harrington, who was a member of our Militia a little over six years ago. While at college he took ROTC, and was commissioned as a Lieutenant of MP’s when he graduated. He was recently promoted to 1st. Lt., has just seen service in Iraq and returned after a year there. Two weeks ago he was assigned to the MP battalion here on post. When General Greene asked us to camp, to organize and train, Lt. Harrington requested to be made our MP Platoon leader. Since he knows a lot of us the General asked me if we could use him I agreed. He has some good ideas on how our families can be protected while we are gone, he will finish a detailed plan with several options and have it ready by tomorrow so if you’re concerned see him then, I know I will.”
The Lt. sat back down and Dan continued, “General Greene, said we will get only a few more men from him. But once we are all on active duty, he will be asking for a lot of prior service men to be assigned to fill out his units that are under manned, especially with drivers and support personnel. Besides the 3100 members of our units that have shown up, we also have over nine hundred new people who had shown up by 0500 hours this morning, by night fall it will be more then double that. We can expect more and more every day and we have been asked to start organizing them until the army can step in and do the job. We will use these new people first if possible to meet the Generals request, before we raid our units. We have a list of his requirements and I’m sure there are plenty of new ex-military people that will fill the needed postings.”
Now I will let Major Dix have the floor, once again” Dan then set down.
Thank you Lt. Colonel Marion, General Greene sends his regards, he wanted to be present and may join us later. But for now he’s busier then a one legged man in an ass kicking contest, a funny thing to see, but he’s winning it too.” Everyone laughed politely at the thought.
As the laughter died down, Maj. Dix continued. “Any thing that we say, now or later, about troop strengths or movements, can not leave our meetings, I think you all understand that, good. Now Gen. Greene and his staff have to move the Units of the 24th. Division located here, and the NG units from the Carolinas all out to Fort Carson Colorado by the end of the week. He has to form them into a cohesive unit in less then ten days, maybe. From there they move again to the western front and will try to hold the Chinese Units in California from moving east.”
He has appointed me as your liaison officer for now. So the first item we are to talk about is the appointment, I’m sorry the election of the Militia Brigade Commander and the executive officer or XO, and to selecting the necessary staff to help manage your unit.”
Dix would let them think about that choice for a while as he told them “The General is sticking his neck on the chopping block for the Militia, first for asking you to report and start organizing, and the second by asking you to elect one of your own to be the commander.”
But his reasons are simple and correct; he wants your commander to know your people and tactics, that’s why it has to be one of your own. If the people in Washington or at the State level were to appoint someone, that person would want to set up their own people in the staff and commands, to change your TO&E, training methods everything, and that’s not acceptable with the current tactical situation out west. We don’t have the time available or the equipment needed. Tomorrow starts the second week in September, I think you guys will be in the thick of things by the second week in November, ready or not. General Greene and a couple of his friends back east agree on that.”
Most of you know how thin American is in combat ready units here at home and right now we are using and moving into combat whatever is available right now, trying to slow the enemies advance. We were lucky up in Washington State with the Chinese having landed north of the border, the terrain favors us there, keeping them in the narrow coastal plain region and stopping their advance south.”
In California they can advance north, east or south with only a couple of our divisions and the few local National Guard units they’re making the attempt in slowing them down. Our Air Force units that are close to the action have taken a beating doing the same all because of the Chinese counter measures, so we are limited in the targets we can hit or get too. The Chinese brought along a large amount of AA missiles and they have been effective in keeping us away from the landing zones, so far. We can expect a link up of the two Chinese forces later today. These two forces, the one from San Francisco pushing south to Los Angles as that force moves north, there are no American military forces in between to slow them down. A sizable force of Chinese Armor along with mechanized infantry from Los Angles is also moving southeast to push the Marines from Camp Pendleton and the Air force from most of their southern Cal Airbases. For some reason the Chinese up in San Francisco don’t seem to be in a big hurry for now in moving east and have keep most of their forces within fifty miles of the coast. Remember this information is classified so do not talk about it out side of our meetings.”
Now for your election of a Brigade Commander, General Greene said I should give you thirty minuets to talk this over and vote your choice. As I said the General will back your decision, and request the state to confirm the appointment. I will leave the room and give you time to talk this over and to vote on.” After Major Dix finished speaking he then turned to walk out.
Hold on for a sec. Major Dix,” Lt Col. Red Stoddard of 4th battalion said standing up, as the Major turned back to hear him. “There’s no reason to leave the room, we figured this out when we got the call from Dan early Saturday morning. I’m not speaking just for myself, Clive Walters of 2nd and John Falker of the 3rd Battalion and all of the Command Sgt. Majors have talked this over before the meeting started. As the Commanders and senior NCO’s of the main units of the Brigade we have made our choice already.”
And we have settled on Lt. Col. Dan Marion of 1st. Battalion, he helped start this Militia, and has worked the hardest to make it grow and become what it is today. He is well liked by all the men, and has their respect, and he has seen combat and commanded men in battle. That’s more then I did as an Artillery Battery CO during Gulf 1, when I was just in a supporting role.”
As I said all four of the Battalions Sgt. Majors agree also, he’s the best choice and I think the best one suited for the job. But if there is any one present and they might wish to suggest someone else?” Red paused and looked around at the faces as everyone shook their heads no.
OK, those in favor raise your right hand if you vote for Dan,” everyone raised their right hand to agree.
Red looked at Dan and with a wink of his right eye and a smile, said, “Tag your it Dan. Or until they find someone better or your dead,” referring to the line from ‘Star Ship Troopers.’ “Sorry sir I didn’t mean to call you by your first name, its Colonel Marion now folks.” Red was joined by the other Bn. commanders who stood and clapped, instantly joined by everyone else standing as they all looked at Dan as he stood up.
Major Dix nodded his head in agreement thinking, just what the General hoped for as he took his seat.
Dan walked back to the podium as the applause ended and said. “I appreciate your trust in me, I wish that this vote had not been in a time of crises, but in that we have no choice. I will continue to give my all, to do the best that I can, thank you. One thing I want each and everyone to know, is that I will work my hardest to bring as many of you home alive and unhurt as I can. One way or another I will promise you this, we all come back home.”
Now before the second order of business, and this is a request not an order, as it will have to be confirmed by a vote of first Battalion members. I would like to see that Major William Summers the 1st. Bn. XO become the new Commanding officer, he has been with the militia a year longer then I have, and I know he can do the job. Also let everyone know that once we are called by the state all voting of the members for their officers could fall by the way, so we will need to fill all of our command positions by tomorrow morning. Of course knowing that recognition will be up to the state and any statues they pass regarding the Militia.”
I will be asking you all later for a few men and women to make up my staff and I will try to keep the request to the minimum, and spread evenly among the battalions if possible. The First official order that I give is for all of us to pray hard each day for our country and for our men. We have to be on God’s side if we are to remain a free nation.”
“The second request or my second order is that I have Cody Wolf the 1st. Bn. Sgt. Major to become the brigade Sgt Major, sorry William but I need my right hand man. He keeps me honest and on the ball, besides he loves to train as much as I do.”
Major Summers answered with a smile, “That’s alright sir, you’re the commander and you give the orders. I’m sure the Sgt. Major has a excellent replacement in mind for his old job.”
Dan shook his head in agreement he knew Cody was two steps ahead of him in planning such things. “My next order is to place Capt. Boa Diem as the Brigade Head Quarters Company commander. That way he can make sure that all mess units give the highest quality meals that can be provided. Napoleon said this truth so many years ago, ‘that an army marches and fights on its stomach.’ With him coordination chow and the other jobs I assign him, you all know he will help maintain moral at its highest level.”
The fourth order is to make the training wing separate and not a part of the Brigade Head Quarters element. When we deploy they will remain back here at Ft. Riley and continue to train the next Militia units that form and organize, this will ensure that we receive replacements that know our tactics and our weapons.”
Top Peters come forward please,” Dan asked of the training NCO.
Doug Peters walked to the front and came to attention before Dan, not sure of what the Brigade Commander had in mind. So he saluted and said, “1st. Sgt. Peters as you requested sir.”
Dan returned the salute and said so all could hear. “I may be called to the carpet for this but, as the commander of our Militia Unit, I need men of quality to be in charge and know that they have the authority and rank to be effective in their jobs. As of this moment you are now Major Peters in charge of the Militia Training Company and assistant S-3 for the brigade, until we deploy that is. Congratulations Doug, oh by the way you are out of uniform, I expect you to have that corrected by evening chow.” Dan said as he smiled and shook Doug’s hand and handed him two gold majors’ insignia. “You won’t need subdued ones for a day or two and by then we should know what branch of the army you will be in, I will ask them to place you in the Armored Calvary, to me that is the most flexible of the combat arms.”
Major Peters was stunned by Dan’s action; he shook the offered hand, and took the two golden pieces of rank. Then he stepped back and saluted again and walked back to his seat in a daze. Dan saw the door in the back open, and saw a hand wave a small green flag, that was his cue.
Now we come to the second order of business asked for by General Greene, before we hammer out our table of organization and equipment. And that is to pick a brigade XO. Most of us who are prior service know, we don’t even know half of what we need to know. The military has changed so much in the last six years let alone the past sixteen when I was last called up on Reserve duty. Red and Clive, sorry Lt. Col. Walters and Lt. Col. Stoddard both got out in 1999 and they know what I’m referring to.”
So I need an XO who is active military and knows his stuff, one who is a quick learner and a good teacher. I speak my mind and I expect my XO to be one who will do the same, a yes man is the last thing this unit needs or can afford. Do I hear any nominations?”
A deep voice from the back of the room gave the command, “Militia, Ah-tennnnn-SHUN!'' As everyone turned and saw that post Command Sgt. Maj. Dennis Cooper had given the order, everyone quickly stood up and came to attention.
Major General Greene then stepped into the room, and the CSM then commanded, “Militia, Stand at ease”. Followed by “Stand easy,’ you may take a seat.”
General Greene remained at attention, so Dan said, “General Greene you have the floor sir.”
The General then walked to the podium and said, “I only have a few minuets but I need to address two issues. The first one and I over heard your need for an XO, so I would like to recommend a man who will serve you well, one that can fill your needs. So I’m asking you, if you don’t mind my suggestion, I would like to see Major James Dix in that position.”
Dix just set there with his mouth shut, he knew a set up was in the make, but in time of war you do as you’re ordered. Even if it’s just an implied order, and a Major listens to a General every time.
With out pausing the General gave his reasons, “I know how the US Army thinks, I’ve been on active duty for over thirty years. They will want one of their own working directly with your unit, so what better position then the number two man. Major Dix also knows the post and all of its assists and can be very useful in helping with the mountain of paper work that must be completed to bring everyone one of you up to par with the regular GI.”
He has been under my command for a little over two years this time, and a few years back served with me for a year, he’s a good man, and he is due soon for a transfer. I can’t think of a better way to keep him around and utilize his skills. Most of your senior officers and NCO’s know him and he has helped in your recent armor training with Buck’s equipment.”
And I would hate to see him swallowed up and sent to the Pentagon as a paper pusher. As I said he’s a good instructor and a quick study, besides he needs some command time and I’m sure that your Colonel will give him that and more. Now, do I need to give you time to talk this over?”
I second the motion on Major Dix as our Brigade Executive Officer,” Dan said quickly.
I concur with the Generals nomination and the Colonels second,” CSM Wolf added on queue.
All those in favor please signify by raising your right hand,” General Greene asked?
With out any hesitation everyone raised there hand in agreement, most knew of Major Dix and the support he had given them in training. Besides if Dan and Cody trusted him that was good enough.
And for the second issue I want to address, Colonel Marion I see that you have three officers present not wearing the correct rank, I will correct one of those, and you will see that the other two are corrected and to make sure that they are entered on the Militia list of all officers that will be submitted to the state tomorrow. The Lt. Governor has assured me he will handle its passage through the necessary committees and have the bill on the floor of both chambers to be debated on by that evening. The sooner it is legal here, I don’t think congress or the brass back east will yell to loud. Least not with the shooting war and all that is going on out west,” the general added.
Colonel Daniel Marion front and center,” General Greene ordered.
Dan marched up and stood to attention in front of the General, who looked Dan in the eyes and asked in a low voice but loud enough so those closest could hear. “Do you know the cost of command during war?”
His answer was a simple, “Yes Sir, I know the cost, once paid its never forgotten sir.” The lump that had formed in his throat didn’t affect his voice of reflect the sadness that comes from being in a combat command, or knowing that his decisions good or bad will cost lives.
Good,” the General said and then in a lower voice told Dan. “And to let you know Dan. It won’t get any easier either, we can’t afford to lose this war. So some of our choices are going to be very hard to live with, that is the sad but honest truth. Too many people believe that giving orders is easy; they don’t have to live with a do or die decision having to be made or followed through with. It gets very lonely at times leading a command.”
Gen. Greene raised his voice again so others close by could hear as he told Dan, “The Lt. Governor phoned and hour ago I told him I thought the election would go this way, and he sends his congratulations, that will be followed in a letter, authorizing this 1st. Brigade of the Kansas Militia to be activated by the State of Kansas. The United States Government will soon do the same confirming your unit to active duty status, for the common defense of our Republic, and for the duration of our present hostilities. The acting Governor will confirm your election and to the appointed rank of full Colonel, as I said this will be confirmed by the state House and Senate in legislation during the next day or two.”
Then in a louder voice so that all members of the Militia present could hear him he said. “I have been told that the President has or will issue an executive order stating that the Army is to recognize these Militia appointments by the Governor’s of the States and if the local commanding officer, meaning me concurs, which I do. This will help the Army in the integration of those few state units into the regular Armed Forces as they are formed and trained.”
You men and women present here today and your Colonel have the honor of being the first Militia unit and the first Militia Commander since World War One to be so selected.”
And may I add I’m damn glad you, and your other Battalion commanders and especially your noncoms, and everyone who joined had the foresight and the courage to do what was right in organizing and training these last few years. Especially when most American elitist were very busy trying to demonize the people of the Militia, they never thought it would be needed again. And that is why our founding fathers placed the Militia clause in the second amendment; they knew the dangers a free republic and a free people would face in a totalitarian or socialistic world. And they knew the necessity and value of a well armed and trained force that is composed of the people for the common defense.”
General Greene then said, “Normally we would have your wife present to pin on you new rank, but the situation being what it is, I would like to do the honor if you don’t mind?” The General had asked and that meant a lot to Dan, he was one that said ‘never assume’. Afraid that his voice would betray him Dan nodded his head.
The General took a single silver Colonel insignia from his pocket to pin it over Dan’s sowed on Lt. Colonels rank on his BDU shirt, “I know how much you place in tradition, just as I do. So I’d like for you to wear with pride this eagle that I once wore. I won’t say that it has any luck with it or that I even had it with me before the start of the second Gulf War.”
I did wear it knowing the full weight it carriers, and that a commander must command and not just give orders.” He then shook Dan’s hand, and then snapped to attention and said, “Colonel Marion you have a command to organize, it will be the first Militia unit called up for service in the American Army in almost 100 years. Do a good job, set a high standard and the other Militia units that follow will be modeled after yours.” Both Dan and the General saluted each other and the ceremony was complete.
Dan then addressed the Militia leaders; “I need to ask the General a couple of questions in private before he leaves. You have ten minuets so take a break,” Cody gave the order, “Brigade Attention,” all the members then stood up at attention.
General Greene and Dan walked out of the room and the Brigade and Division Command Sergeants Majors stood guard to keep anyone from interfering. “Thank you for coming Sir, I know you’re swamped but the men and I appreciated it.”
That’s alright Dan, just to let you know the Governors of Louisiana and Texas called the Pentagon this morning and they then informed me an hour ago, that both states started forming a couple of Battalions of Militia from local groups yesterday that have been training like your men the last few years, the Pentagon has directed for them to be trained here. I don’t have the time or manpower to set up the necessary training, so your training people are going to get that job. You can expect these other states militia to make contact with your S-1 later today, and they should arrive later this week depending on when transportation is arranged. I want you to use them to make up the nucleus of the second Militia Brigade, and the man you nominated for the second brigade commander has been approved by the Lt. Governor,” the general informed him.
The General had let Dan the day before know that the men from Texas and Louisianan might be heading their way for training so this was no surprise as he said, “Yes sir we are working on that now, we’ll find a way. I want to let you know that we have some air assist that T-Oil promised us, eighteen helicopters most are Hueys, and several fixed wing including a couple of Douglas A-4 Sky Raiders, and a lot of crop dusters, and some old transport stuff.”
Good to have air support, the Air Force might want the fixed wing under their command but go ahead and organize the unit and include the information to the state.”
Yes sir and then three questions I need answers for sir, how large of a unit do you want, and how much time we will have to train, and will we be assigned to your command?”
The Pentagon said to organize you as a completely self contained independent Brigade, I would suggest something like 5,000 to 6,00 men, including all support units less artillery for now. Also to have another 1000 men ready as stand bye for those who wash out or can’t make the physical standard, you can recycle some of those people into the follow on units.”
As far as time allotted for training, I would like to say you would have three months, but expect half that time if your lucky, so make every hour count. And if I am still alive or in command when your deployment comes, I would be proud to have your people in my unit, but that is up to God first, and then to the leaders in Washington second, it is not my call. Now if the Governor were to ask it might carry some weight, so talk to him if you can find the time when he gets back?”
I have a command and staff meeting tomorrow morning at 0700 hours be there with your XO and CSM, and your S-3, is there any thing else,” General Green asked?
Just one more item, our newly forming armor unit sir, if I add them that will bring us close to 6000 men?”
Then add them to your command, that will give you some needed firepower. God knows we are going to need all the Armor we can get our hands on. I’ve sent a fax to DC asking the Joint Chiefs to release at least 300 of the M60A3’s from the strategic reserve to be assigned to the Militia units as they are trained. If they release them then yours and Majors Dix’s training people will have to take prior service people and quickly form them into two Armor Brigades. I pointed out that Ft. Riley is the perfect training post, reminding them that the 1st Infantry Division had that many tanks here at one time. I’m sure they are being flooded with lots of suggestions; as I haven’t received any replies from DC except from the Presidents people saying he will issue temporary orders authorizing the Militia appointments.”
Dan’s mind was racing full throttle at the idea of 300 M60’s.
Dan be glad you had friends like Buck and Mike that were able to provide some assistance, the Lord knows we are going to need all the help we can get just to stop the Chinese west of the Colorado border. Work your men hard; do as many live fire exercises and FTX’s as you can, have the post training wing act as an OPFOR, that’s opposing forces, to hone your unit. Also work on your staff, Intel, communications and especially in the S-4 area, do you have someone in mind for that position?”
Not off the top of my head, we don’t have a whole lot of stores or talented people in that area. We have good people at battalion level, but they are still learning their jobs.”
I’ll call a friend who retired two years ago from the Army at the rank of Lt. Col. His name is Barry Kolvek, he lives over in Kansas City Missouri, and he’s a patriot through and through. He knows the S-4 job inside and out and would be able to set up from scratch the Brigade position and be of help to the Battalions. I’m not pushing him on to you for the job, because that’s your choice to make after you meet him.”
Thank you sir, any offer of help is appreciated, if possible I don’t want to rob the battalions of their best men if I can keep from it. I have a feeling that a whole lot of retired military are going to step up to help.”
They always do, service to the country for them is like breathing for a everyone else, we are lucky to have them, I have to go,” Gen. Greene then saluted and turned to leave.
Dan quickly returned the saluted then turned back to Lt. Col Dix and CMS Wolf both men had been standing a few steps away listening, waiting.
James Dix said with a weak smile, “I should say thanks sir, except I didn’t expect to be part of the Militia or promoted or to be your XO. I’m not really sure I want the job or that I’m ready for it, you could have warned me, that would have been proper sir!”
Dan gave a laugh as he said, “Sorry Jim but sensory overload, we are all going to have to adapt, improvise and overcome. Here put one of these on” Dan handed him two subdued Lt. Colonel insignias. As they shook hands he said, “Oh by the way welcome to the Kansas Militia and congratulations on your promotion. We will have to get you some of our unit shoulder patches, but keep the rest of your uniform as is since you are regular army. I’ll ask about having orders cut to make this official. And I understand your feeling about not being sure if you want the job, because I have a few doubts about myself too. But it doesn’t matter what we feel, our country needs us and we have to do our best ”
Lt. Col Dix suggested, “I would also like some of the Kansas Militia tapes, I’ll have the tailor put them on under my US Army tape. That way everyone will know which unit I belong to.”
Good idea, make a note, one thing I don’t want to change is our uniform from the old woodland BDU pattern that we are currently wearing, I don’t want us to wear the new army digital. As for my reasoning behind why I want to keep the unit in BDU’s. Before Saturday the Army was in short supply of the new Multi-cam, not all of the active Reserves or National Guard people have switched over yet. And because we are the Militia, we should be distinctive from the regular Army. I also would like to keep our uniform as basic as possible, for now just the regular BDU will do, maybe in time we will get to a khaki as our dress or office uniform but that’s down the road.”
I know the officers will appreciate that sir,” Lt. Col. Dix said. “Just a set of greens runs close to three hundred dollars, more when you add shoes, cover and all to it. I know all of our officers wouldn’t want to hand that cash over in the next few days. Just to have the uniform sit in a closet when we head off to the front. I still have nine sets of the BDU’s, I’ll switch back tomorrow.”
Cody watching the time said, “That’s ten minuets sir!”
Dan chuckled lightly, “Thank you Brigade Sergeant Major Wolf, earning your pay already. Since you’re my top NCO, do you need to change your strips out to?”
No sir, only the title changes from Battalion Sergeant Major to Brigade Sergeant Major and of course the pay goes up to,” he answered with a smile.
That’s going to be a strange feeling having to get used to,” Dan intoned, “getting paid now for the same job we have been doing for free all these years. Not that I’ll be complaining, cause I know why we did it, why all of us did it; for freedom and for our nation for all of those years. A job that had to be done just in case we were needed; and man how we are needed now.” The other two men nodded their heads in agreement as they re-entered the meeting room.
After everyone took their seats Dan re-started the meeting, “Alright now the General said we are to form an independent Brigade of around 6,000 men and women. Remember no phone calls, e-mail, or letters home or to friends telling them the size or composition of our units, all of that information is classified, and if the enemy doesn’t know about our size or us in general it plays into our favor. Remember 'Loose Lips, sinks Ships', or in our case gets you and your friends killed.
Battalion Commanders three things that I will insist that must be trained into your people until they have nightmares and the training continues even after that.”
Number one; concentrate on Small unit tactics, fire and movement at fire team, squad, platoon and at Company level. Every week, every man and women will spend half a day at the range no excuses accepted. I plan to start Battalion and Brigade movement and maneuver training during week two.”
Number two; camouflage and concealment to include prepping all firing positions, figure that the Chinese have as good of night vision and thermal sights as we should have. So if a unit stops for an hour they are to dig in or find cover, period. This has to become second nature to everyone without being ordered.”
Number three; and this one is for the Battalion and Company commanders again. You’re to work on your supply chain within your command with help from Brigade. You’re to make it do what it’s supposed to do, in keeping the man at the front feed, clothed and never short of ammo. I will make sure that Brigade has pushed all that we have available up to the stores area. We are fortunate to have a first class medical group, and as more medical people join Col. Clark will be setting up teams and assigning these people to the battalions. He knows his job and he will make sure each unit gets there proper share, so don’t interfere, I don’t need to say any more on that subject.”
Now, this is how I see the Brigade shaping up. We have the four current Infantry battalions and a mixed Armor battalion with its mechanized infantry, using what Buck has provided and what is presently on hand. We will worry later about what he and Mike can buy and get shipped to the US, or equipment that we find local or any the Army or the State assigns us. We also have the small fleet of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft down at Hutchinson, we will need to find pilots for them, and if there are any pilots here or people that you know of, contact them we will need their help.”
Jim spoke up and said, “The Kansas National guard turned over their last six M60A3 two years ago to my wing, for the new M1A‘s. Those six tanks have been sitting in the back of my training unit’s motor pool ever since, just waiting to be shipped off. It shouldn’t take much more then new batteries, purging the nitrogen for the guns and some basic parts to have them up and running, I called my mechanics in yesterday morning and they started working on them then. I’ll have the Post logistical center start the paper work in transferring them back to state control, Sir you’ll have to ask the Lt. Governor to provide them to the unit.”
Dan agreed, “That we can do,” as he wrote the information down. Looking at his notes he then said, “Here is what we have so far on hand in the way of tracked vehicles. Right now we have a medium armor unit with the six M60’s mentioned and Bucks three M-60 A3’s, which will give us nine heavy tanks, two platoons of four and one spare for that companies HQ. With a Light tank platoon of four M41’s. and two, twin 40mm dusters for some AA protection.”
Fifteen M113’s, fourteen of them to the Mech Infantry, four for each of the three tracked infantry platoons and two extra for the HQ platoon, and four former m107/125’ mortar carriers, hopefully the army will supply’s us with the tubes? Either 120mm or the old 4.2 inch.”
For reconnaissance we have 32 two man, four wheel drive scout cars, most of them are Ferrets that are completely rebuilt and reliable. Eight of these recon vehicles will stay in the Armor Battalion, the Infantry battalions will receive four each to beef up your scout platoons.”
Four for the training wing, and the last four ferrets will go to the MP Company, that we will be forming at the brigade level.”
Turning to Lt. Harrington he says, “Plan on using them as a separate platoon with the one extra M113 for a reaction force and road blocks, you also will get twelve of the M151A2’s, that Mike and Buck have offered.”
Lt. Harrington had a puzzled look on his face.
So Dan added, “The M151A’s are jeeps.”
Lt. Harrington smiled as he answered, “I like that, they are smaller then a Humvee, more mobile and easier to hide, thank you sir.”
Just remember they have zero armor,” Dan said as he continued with his list, “the mechanized unit will also have the twelve armored, 6x6 wheeled all drive, infantry carriers they are the South African Ratel and each one can carry eleven men, plus four of the Cadillac Gage 6x6’s which are very similar to the Ratel. That will make up three platoons of infantry, with two vehicles at the company HQ. I plan to keep two vehicles back at Brigade Company HQ, for Convoy escort and as spares. We also have 9 other jeeps and 25 various 6x6 trucks, 2 ½ ton and 5 ton, to add to the light Armor Battalion.”
For right now each of the Infantry Battalions will have 15 M35’s or the Deuce an a half as they are called. We will get more assigned and doled out later its just going to take a little time.”
The Brigade HQ has 25 five and ten ton trucks right now, to support the battalions.”
As for planned additions to the Brigade, Mike Withers is in South America right now and will finalize today on buying another twenty plus M-41’s and eight more M-42 duster AA tracks, and the all important ammo for the 76mm main guns and 40mm AA ammo for the dusters. He has already lined up some C-130 civilian cargo planes to fly them in to the T-oil base airfield. Once they are loaded it’s close to a ten-hour flight so if he is successful we will see some of them early tomorrow morning, and we will have all of them by the end of the week. Mike has already contacted the Commerce and State Depts. And both have issued emergency clearance with out any customs interference. Same with Buck, he is in South Africa right now, and he has purchased 40,000 FN rifles and several hundred Machine-guns and other small arms.”
There were several loud whoops and ‘all right,’ from the men as Dan continued. “He has lined up two 747’ cargo carriers that will be loaded Monday morning with the small arms and all the extra ammunition they can carry.”
Buck also told me he should be able to purchase another forty or so wheeled armored vehicles and have them shipped over. He hope’s he can buy them with the 20mm guns too, for the added firepower. At the same time he is arraigning a SA flagged charter Roll-roll carrier that will start loading the light armor and other equipment and lots more small arms and the ammo that is to heavy for flying. He is pushing hard and hopes to have it all loaded and headed out of port no later then Wednesday morning, our time. If he is successful the ship will arrive in New Orleans fourteen to sixteen days later. He doesn’t think the South African government will get cold feet and decide to change to a neutral nation status before then, as of yesterday they are offering to sell the US as much munitions as they can.”
Lt. Colonel Dix suggested, “Sir except for the small arms, why don’t we have all of the light armor delivered to the Hutchinson airfield complex, I suspect we will have spies watching what comes in here to Ft. Riley and soon after that it’s going to be reported back to the enemy, if it’s down at Hutchinson it might not be found out? That way when we deploy our Brigade’s armor unit exact strength will be unknown to the Chinese. That might just give us the needed advantage in the first few fights?”
Dan agreed “Good idea, I don’t think the people down by Hutchinson would mind having close to a thousand people training there, Buck told me once that his family has close to 35,000 acres there. That would make a nice training area even if we could use only a small part of it.”
Lt. Col. Dix, then suggested, “As for the M60’s that are here on post, they should remain here and if we can bring in another forty we would have enough to conduct battalion maneuvers. We still have six M60 simulators in storage, I’ll have them ready for crew training in three days and we can use them for the platoon drills. And all of the 105mm firing should be conducted here too as we have all the ranges set up and ready to go. We can rotate the crews up here for the initial training and later for the live fire phase. We will do all of the main gun firing here except for zeroing of the weapons at Bucks place and that will be done there with sup munitions, that way we can keep it very low key down there.”
Dan agrees, “Jim I like that idea, and I also want you to get a message sent out to Yakima firing range, find out if they still have those 20 new spare barrels for the 40 mm dusters in storage, plus any 40mm ammo. I know it’s been thirty years since I was there, but you know how the army is, if they have room and it’s on someone’s inventory sheet it never gets shipped away. Also send out a general query to all post for any 40 mm AA or 76mm ammo of all types, we are going to need all that we can find. Each tank has a combat load of 65 rounds. So any APDS-T, APFSDS-T, HEAT-T, Frag-HE, Canister and WP that we can find we will put to good use.”
Now we get into the fun part, assigning the new people to fill in the holes with in our many commands, and in moving some of the qualified people to the Armor or Aviation units and setting up the training wing. Buck has been working as the Armor CO; he needs a good XO to take over for Mike Withers because I plan to move Mike into the Air Unit…”

That means when we are all together and not spread out, as our unit is now tasked with occupying this collage campus in Fullerton, so we must wait, until we are ready.”

If no one talks how will I know, but they must shut up. The Chinese will be mad but I don’t care. Colonel Awad says we are to wait before we can kill them in large numbers.”
What happens if we are shot at,” Dwad asked?
Now if we see a group of Americans with guns that is different, we must defend ourselves. The people of California, by law are not to have many guns and this plays very well into our hands.”

Let me explain Hasheem, I want you and your radio-man since you both read English to pick up a yellow phone book and look under gun shops or sporting goods. Then take a platoon of men and six trucks and go and take these guns from those stores that are close to us here. Make sure you get some bullets for each type, that way when we kill small groups of Americans we can say they shot at us first. The killing of individuals will be by beheading, and we will do it here in a small building on the college grounds. After that we will bury the bodies at night so no one finds out. Keep everything quiet and the killings on a small scale, do you understand, good, and to hell with what the Chinese want.”

Just to let you know yesterday several of the local families tried to leave, but they were turned back by the Chinese army at the bridges, that is why I asked all of you over, to inform you all of our situation. Oscar’s three sons and my two boys used their motorcycles and checked out all possible escape routes for our families last night and this morning, there are none. The Chinese have control of all bridges to the north and east, and the major highways are full of their troops moving out away from the ports. Every major intersection including all state and county highways and secondary roads to the south have at least a company of their soldiers guarding them, and again the roads are full of their troops…”
No way, your sons have to be wrong?” Several people voiced their disbelief at once, “There has to be a way open…did they go south below San Jose, surely if we headed north through the Napa valley region…”
Holding up his hands to get their attention Pepe had to raise his voice, “Come on everyone get quiet now please.” As they quieted down he continued, “My son Tom speaks fair Chinese, he talked to one of their Officers last night just before curfew, and was told there are no exits available for refugees now. That we are to stay in our homes until a public announcement can be made, and things return to normal.”
How in hell can things return to normal we have been invaded by the Chinks,” Don Saddler said. “The only way it’s going to get normal is for them to leave.”
What about our soldiers and Air Force, where are they? We haven’t heard any bombs going off since noon yesterday?” Several people asked astonished by the lack of American resistance.
I can only speculate, but since the Chinese are pushing out east and north, our troops the Army Marines and the National Guard are probable falling back in front of them trying to slow them down, and I expect our Air Force is doing the same, taking out some of the advancing Chinese forward equipment, again all I’m doing is making a guess.”
How long are the Chinese going to be here,” another voice asked in the back?
Tom Sinclair stood up and was recognized; “The officer said they were planning on staying in America for at least two years. Forcing the US to make a negotiated peace with them, or until the war was over. He said for us to respect them and obey their orders and all would be OK. When I asked him how many soldiers they had, he said millions.”
No way, there can’t be millions of them,” someone in the back said.
I don’t know if there are millions, but I know I’ve seen over ten thousand, and from what I have heard on the short wave radio and Ham nets they control the LA area too and their forces are spreading out now to cover the whole state, so we better expect for them to be here a while.”
This is bull-shit,” Peter Rose said, “it’s just an excuse for the Republicans to gain control of our city and state and to spoil our vote, that’s so they can impose their religious views and thinking over us.”
Don laughed and said, “Shut up and sit down. Your might be a big professor at Berkley but your blind and stupid. Those are Chinese soldiers all right, they have a lot of soviet style tanks and APC’s. Those jets you see flying overhead are Chi-Com designed fighters and bombers, and they are headed out with payloads of missiles and bombs attacking Americans fighting their ground forces advance, and then they are returning empty to reload.”

Stop it you two,” Oscar yelled, “We have enough problems as it is. Now please Professor Rose, Don, keep it civil, I’m asking you both please now.”
Both of the antagonist glared at each other and Don walked over to the other side of the yard and set down.
Thank you, we have to keep our meeting on tract as we don’t have a lot of time. OK,” looking at one of the men who had just argued then at the other he gets them both to nod their heads in agreement, “OK.”
Pepe continued, “With the information from Tom’s recon I know that a lot of people from the suburbs further east were able to get out ahead of the Chinese. Unfortunately we were too close in to the docks and by the time first light arrived on Saturday morning and we woke up to the news of the invasion we were already behind their front lines. Now the main reason I asked all of you to come over was to have a discussion about our food stocks. I need for every one of you to take a quick mental inventory on what you have on hand. It doesn’t have to be a balanced meal just something to help keep the stomach quiet, alright by a show of hands how many people have enough food for a week?”
All but one of the sixty people held up their hands, the lone person was Peter and he looked around then shrugged his shoulders as he said, “Today is shopping day, beside me and my room mate eat out for most of our meals!”
That’s OK Peter, I’m just trying to get some idea of where we stand. Now who has enough food for two weeks?” Only a few of the hands went down. “OK then enough food to last three or four weeks now,” just a little less then half of the hands remained in the air.
Five weeks then,” the same number of hands remained in the air.
Alright that’s really good, now how many have enough food for six weeks?” Fifteen hands remained up.
Good Two months or more?” Ten hands remained in the air.
Oscar said, “Marcus put you hand down same with Pepe and my family members because we all have at least a years supply on hand. Now that’s just leaves you two, Don and, and your Larry Banks right?”
Larry answered, “That’s correct, I’m a communications director for the port authority and we were directed by FEMA last year that each family was to hold at least six months worth of food on hand in case of an earthquake. I doubled it to be safe and thank goodness I did because my son and his family will be coming to stay with us. The Chinese are making them move from their apartments as they have sequestered the whole complex for their troops.”
Good God, they're making people refugees with no place to go, what in hell will happen next. Sorry guys for the outburst, Don what about you,” Oscar asked?
A year plus but my kids and their children will be coming back home too, maybe six months now but that depends on what they bring along in the way of food with them?”
The men around Peter heard him mutter, “Figures, conservative hoarders.” A couple of them look at him and shake their head in disgust.
OK, we are…yes Larry you have a commit,” Pepe started to say when he saw Larry’s hand still up in the air?
I’m just making an estimate on the number of people each family represented here has and the referred to food stocks, with out an actual head count on all of the people in our neighborhood and food available, but my best estimate for all of us, and that’s if we all share we might have at the most two maybe three months worth?”
Pepe smiled as he said, “You’re thinking on the same page we are Larry. As I started to say we have to pool our resources and see if there are any large food storage warehouses close by or around here, say within six to ten miles that is. Oscar and I talked this over, and we don’t want to go any further away from our homes then that.”
Larry again raised his hand and was recognized, “There is an overseas transshipment warehouse down in Richmond that is twelve miles away, and they handle a lot of food for shipping to companies and large store overseas. I’m talking about complete shipments of what a typical store stocks less the frozen and refrigerated foods.”
Don added, “I've been in there. And hat’s everything from toilet paper to toothpaste, and canned food like artichokes to yams, and chicken to tuna. I know because I’m a truck driver and I’ve taken loads in and out of there, it’s a nice big place.”
A truck driver, that’s good Don do they have complete rigs there or do you just dropped off trailers there,” Oscar asked?
Just two or three yard rigs, but down the road another two miles is the hub I work out of. Why? Neither place is open on Sunday and with the Chinese all over the place I don’t think they will be opening tomorrow either.”
I was thinking about using the church bus and taking twenty five of us to go and get two or three semi’s and then loading them up to bring the food back here. That’s why,” Pepe answered? “My boys said there was still quiet a few trucks and lots of cars still moving on the secondary roads, most looked like they were trying to get out of town or to get home and the Chinese aren’t stopping them yet. If we left in half an hour we would be just another group of people moving about and lost in the confusion. Twelve miles isn’t that much further and if we then figure in the loading time we would be back here with at least two hours to spare before curfew.”
One of the other neighbors offered, “I know how to run a fork truck, that will make loading the pallets into the trailers a lot easier.” Most of the men looked at him and nodded their heads in agreement.
I have the keys to my company’s front gate and the dispatch office where the trucks keys are kept. Do you know anyone from the food warehouse Larry,” Don Asked?
No, not off the top of my head, but I have a crow bar which will take care of the chain and lock on the front gate.”
Wow right now folks,” Peter stood up and shouted! “I will not be party to any group of people planning on breaking in and stealing food or anything else for that matter. Count me out!”
I thought you said today was your shopping day Pete,” Don taunted.
It is and I’m heading to the store in a couple of hours.”
We don’t have any electricity Peter, I doubt the stores will either. If they do I don’t know if any one would have shown up for work after listening on the radio and hearing what that Islamic group did yesterday to the people at the liquor stores and their workers.”
Bunch of rag headed bastards, they have screwed up their own countries, and now they want to do the same here. Trust me they haven’t even gotten started yet, not with what they plan to do here in the US of A,” Don said. You could tell he didn’t like them from the tone in his voice.
That’s a bigoted remark, just like a racist would use,” Peter shot back.
No Pete it’s not, and I’m not,” Don said with a sigh, refusing to be baited. “I was over there in 92-93’ active and again in 03’ with the Guard. Hearing about the attacks on our police stations and those stores yesterday, it’s only the beginning of what they will do here. I’m sorry you can’t see that because it’s the honest truth, and just to let you know you are on their short list too. Not because of your life style or any such thing, it just boils down to being an American and they hate all of us period.”
In a more conciliatory tone Don asked, “Peter you are an intelligent man,, so you ought to know what happened when the Jews were trapped in the Warsaw Ghetto? How there were slowly starved and then finally forced to board the trains bound for the death camps. And those who resisted were hunted down and killed.”
That was a very savage world back then, ours is a more civilized world today,” Peter shot back with a very smug look on his face.
No, you are wrong there. There are a lot of very civilized spots, but most of the world has been a very savage place, for a very long time. It's a shame that you and most Americans haven't realized that, in the next few weeks and months you are going to see how savage it really is.”
Turning to Oscar he said, “ I’m going to get on my CB and contact a couple of my buddies that live a few miles away, I’ll get us half a dozen truck drivers or more and they will meet us down at the church, or down at the hub.” Then he turned and walked back toward his home.
Tell them no guns, we don’t want to give the Chinese any reason for shooting at us,” Oscar half yelled at him.
Don with out turning around raises one arm and waved to let him know that he had heard.
Larry turned to all of the neighbors and said, “Friends it sounds like Pepe and Oscar have a plan? I’m better prepared then most of you but I vote yes and I will help anyone who will get off of his or her ass and try to stay alive. My kids will be coming to my place later today and I will then have two young grandchildren to worry about, and they need food to grow and stay alive. Things are going to get very tough very soon cause we are going to be stuck here in the bay area for quiet a while that’s for sure. By us going to get this food we ensure our families survival, and if we can get between three to six truck loads a lot more people will survive too.” Raising his hand he said, “I’m in, how many more will join us?”
Most of the people raised their hands, except for the older people and of course Peter. One of the older man asks, “I’m to old to do a lot of lifting and carrying, but I can come along as a look out or help in any way that I can.”
A couple of the others voiced their concerns and fears to, “I would help too except I have a bad back.” And another one said, “I’ll help too, but I’m just to old and worn out, but I know that my daughter, the son-in-law and the grand kids will want to come and stay with us, I’m an old Ham operator, and I can monitor a lot of frequencies, will that help?”
Pepe told them, “Please don’t worry we will still share with you and your family members, I won’t let any of my neighbors starve. We are all in this together and I plan on bringing enough food back to last 300 to 500 families for a year. You people that stay behind, you need to make room in your garages for the food and if you have a backyard swimming pools use your gravity drains and clean them out, then refill them with fresh water and tarp them over, we’ll know soon enough if we will have to use it for drinking water, please do that now as we have to plan for any and all contingencies.”
Larry asked, “If we could get a few of our older members to canvas the neighborhood, on the amount of food on hand and the number of people here and those expected to show up. Then they could call us on a CB while we are at the warehouse and give us an idea of what we might need?”
Larry would you organize that,” Pepe asked?
No you’re going to need all the strong backs at the warehouse, but my neighbor Zack Armenia was a personnel manager for the City a few years ago before he retired.” Turning to the man on his right he asked, “Zack could you and a few of the older men and women do that for us, it would really help?”
The smile on Zack’s face said it all, “Yes I would gladly help, and thank you for asking.” He stood up and looked around at the older men and women and received nods of approval as he continued with, “a dozen or so of us old farts can do the job in a hour or two.” Turning back to look at Pepe and Oscar he finished with, “We would be proud to help our neighbors, once again thank you for asking us.”
Oscar smiled as he replied, “Thank you, it’s going to take all of us working together, when you have your list please bring it to me. Pepe has a list of those we want to go and …”
Peter interrupted, “You can do what you think you have to do. As for me, I’m going to drive around until I find an open store, I’m no thief, and your taking food that should be shared among all of the people here in the city,” he then turned away with an angry expression on his face and headed up the street to his house.
Holding up a piece of paper with typed names on it Pepe finished for Oscar, “We want only 25 people to go with us to the warehouse, so everyone please check this list, you will see that its divided into an A side and a B side. A side will be going with me, all of the others on the B-side and you others that are here and not on either list are to stay back and watch the neighborhood and coordinate. Yes I know, not everyone’s name is on this list so pleas add your name and address. Then when more people and families move in to your homes make sure to add them to the list too, we have to keep up on who is here with us, OK.”
Everyone nodded their heads so he continued, “Now today is Oscars day and the B-list side is to stay back here watching over our homes. Everyone else on the A side is to meet down at the Church, that’s a block east of here, be there in forty-five minuets. Make sure you have on good work shoes or boots and gloves cause you are going to need them.”
After most of the neighbors had left Tom said, “Dad I’m on the B side, I have my small trail bike that is really quiet and it’s full of fuel, I want to follow Peter and see what he gets up to.”
Good idea,” Pepe said, “I don’t think he will be a problem son but he’s not one to be trusted either.”
I agree,” Oscar said, “he’s never known anything other then his own insulated and over rated position, he’s had a life of luxury compared to the poor bastards in the third world. Hell even Don is a better judge of people then Peter, cause he’s been there and seen the misery of war. And how a few militant religious leaders can wipe up hatred against people who are trying to help them. Even against their own people, just because they want to be top dog. Peter is just your typical hate America first coward, if he lives long enough he just might start to understand and change, but I could be wrong.”
Turning to Pepe he said, “While your gone I’m going to start moving up some of the M1’s and getting some of the other people familiar with them, we will keep the other stuff put away and only train the people we know we can trust. We won’t be able to do any live firing, but running the people through the I A drills will have to do for now.”
Good idea, I’m taking my pickup with its ham radio I’ll be monitoring both of the two daytime emergency frequencies we selected earlier, call with the head count when you get it or, if you need us back sooner.”

Training for staff officers,

Yesterday afternoon I received a message from the Lt. Governor, and with the backing of several state Senators, they suggested that we do a spot commercial, so I had our two media people, that’s Lester and Joe Rollins write something up. Then they couched a few others along with me, and after only four takes last night they thought this last one was good. It will run ever other hour on all of the public access channels across the state for two weeks and is to be aired nightly on the regular channels at least once during prime time, please watch this and let me know what you think?”

The first voice you hear is Sgt. First-class Frost from HQ Company third Battalion.”
General Sherman said, ‘War is hell’, it is and I had forgotten the horrors of battle up close. Something, I had prayed, never to see again. Long ago, I had my baptism to modern warfare, the senses numbing noise, the smell, the taste, and the instant resounding bedlam. And as abruptly as it started the clamor ends and you are left with the mournful haunting cry of the wounded screaming in pain from bloody wounds, the mind numbing shock of your own wounds, and the blood so much blood. And the part that stays with you for a lifetime, the bottomless pit that never leaves you after the anguish and loss for dead friends.”

Will our grandchildren look back and say proudly, ‘thank you Lord for our freedom, it cost a lot of lives but we are free, thank you for the Second Amendment and our Militia and the rest of our countries brave fighting men and women. And for those that paid that hard price, they died in the fighting, not for themselves, but for an American ideal, so future generations like us could live in freedom. They were willing to give all because,
FREEDOM ISN’T FREE.”

Then the notes from a bugle are heard calling reveille.

Sgt. Major Wolf’s deep baritone voice is now heard as an overlay describing the scenes on the TV screen. “The news is continuous covering the two invasion sites, showing the flight of civilians fleeing the advancing Chinese soldiers, and their allies. Our nation’s founders were not politically correct and talked openly of the fight for freedom and the sacrifice that was necessary to insure freedom. Oriana Fallaci an Italian written would have fit right in with them she wrote and I quote, ‘War you wanted, war you want? Good. As far as I am concerned, war is and war will be. Until the last breath.’
America has suffered another surprise attack, just like Pearl Harbor, and 9/11, the Chinese and their Jihad allies hope to force us to surrender on their terms, because for the moment they have the upper hand, but only for the moment.”
Our armed forces, from all the services are being mobilized and heading toward the fighting. The Military units in California and Washington State including the National Guard and some of the volunteer militia groups are fighting the tide, trying to slow down the advance wherever they can. For the United States to win this war it’s going to take more then our present Military Forces. So if you served once we need you again. If you have never served we still need you. The Militia is forming and many have started training, join us today and be part of a proud heritage.”
As Cody’s voice faded you could hear a fife and drum unit playing, with scenes of marching men dressed as Militia starting in 1776’ attire, which morphed into 1812 uniforms. Then a few seconds later into Americans in uniforms from the Mexican American war, then again they morphed into some men wearing the Gray and others the Blue worn by the two sides during the Civil War. Then into the khaki worn by the rough riders, the US Volunteers under Col. Teddy Roosevelt, and this in turn changed to the doughboys of World War One, then changed once again to the GI’s of WWII GI. The last change was of marching men in woodland BDU’s, and then it zoomed onto the service tape each man and women wore, ‘Kansas Militia.’
This then fades and is replaced with Colonel Dan Marion standing between an American flag and the Kansas State flag. A sign behind him says,
FREEDOM ISN’T FREE.’

Our founding fathers guided by God’s hand; gave us the best system of government ever devised. At the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin was asked’ “what have you wrought?” He answered, “….a Republic, if you can keep it.”
Plain and simple, If we can keep it.”
Evil exists in the world, and with out a doubt it has been brought in force to our shores. This Evil exists in many forms and you either fight it or do nothing and let it rule over you. As for men of honor, the latter course is never an option.”
So America finds itself once again at war, but this war is at home now. America needs you; it needs your help now, today.”
We have lived in peace and comfort until last Friday, because good men in years past fought and sacrificed for you. Would you not do the same for your children and grandchildren?”
Come join with me veterans and patriots, your country is calling, your brothers, your sisters, your neighbors in California, and Washington State, all are pleading for help; many are dying, buying us time. They all need you; it’s time to stand up and be counted, not to be weighed, measured and found wanting.”

Today is the day that I run toward the sound of battle. I have been training the last few years, just in case. I have a good rifle and ammunition and I know how to use them. It is now that I am needed; and I’m ready. John Paul Jones said ‘give me a fast ship because I intend to go in harms way’. I say ‘give me good riflemen, the enemy will pay dearly for stepping on free soil.’ Together we can help save innocent lives, who among you will join me?”
I quote from General Dwight Eisenhower’s he said those words over 60 years ago the day before D day. ‘United in this determination and with unshakable faith in the cause for which we fight, we will, with God's help, go forward to our greatest victory.’
Those words are as true today as they were back then in 1944, indeed with Gods help we will prevail. Again I ask whom among you will join me?”
Before I leave you, one more quote this one from Thomas Paine,”
’THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Most Americans are good people, and good people need good leaders. A dispirited people need leaders with courage. And in time of War they need both men of courage and leaders.”
Dan paused for a second and then asked, “Are you one?”
Pausing for a two count he then challenged the viewers. “Step forward, it’s time to find out.”

Col. Marion then snapped to attention and did a right turn facing the American flag, he saluted and said the Pledge of Allegiance.

The image of the Colonel then faded and was replaced with a black and white film clip from World War II showing thousands of GI’s marching past. At the top of the TV screen were the words;
Together we Can
Join the Armed forces fighting for freedom.
The regular Military, the National Guard, or the state Militia. Call the 800 number shown for the recruiter nearest you.
Ask for the free brochure to be mailed to your home address, ‘Why the Militia is needed again.’
American will remain free, because we the everyday citizen is doing what has to be done.

After seeing the TV spot all of the Militia personnel agreed that it was well put together, and said explicitly what needed to be said. They glanced through the brochure, as it was almost exactly the same one they helped put together last spring for handing out to potential recruits.
Jeff Mason was the lone voice of dissent as he pointed out the obvious and said, “Our camp is over a quarter full now. If we air this TV spot we will be bursting at the seams by the end of the week. Just to make a guess on whom we have in camp now, but I’d say we are one-third old militia hands and two-thirds new people. Of the new people so far it would seem that the majority are former active military or friends of our people. If the Governor has you send out a call for every able body man and person who thinks it’s a walk in the park to join and fight, we are going to be swamped!”
Lt. Col. Dix, nodded his head in agreement and added, “That’s true, and that is why we added the 800 number to have people call first, so that we can get a hold on the numbers coming in, and try to space them out, once all of the recruiting offices get up to speed, they can see that the flow of volunteers stays at a steady pace.”
General Greene does expects another four or five thousand more people will show up in the next few days even without the Ad being aired. A good part of them should be prior service to; at least that’s what we are hoping for. He wants as many of those experienced men as we can find, to fill in his shortage in transportation drivers, and he needs experience people especially in the artillery and signal units, and of course he needs a lot more medics to assist the 24th division. As for the rest, he wants us to start forming a second militia brigade size unit, using the same training methods you men have taught for years.”
Boa said, “We had a head count of 8486 at breakfast, every man or women that comes through we first ask if they can cook. For now the seven mess halls are doing OK, but I would like to open the next five by this weekend. For now we have ever Company on a schedule but it is still taking right at two hours just to serve everyone at each meal. If we get the last five up and running we can serve everyone in a little less than one hour. Yes, we are having close to a forty percent wash out rate in the new people and so far we are doing very well with only forty-five of our old hands out of two thousand not up to par. As far as these new people go, maybe a quarter of these would work out as base cooks and drivers. With an extended training cycle I think we can get them up to acceptable physical shape. The Brigand CSM working with the S-1 has already placed some of these wash outs in the necessary support slots, most of them accepted this as just a temporary set back, and they all want a second chance when they are in better shape. We agreed and I do need to set a bottom line with the prior service people, before we wash them out for good, any ideas?”
That all depends on their drive and desire, but they still have to work just as hard as the rest of us. I know they want to help, to contribute. I hate to toss the ball back into your court Doc but it’s a tough call, one that depends on your medical opinion and of course their fiunal medical exam. If they are not fit for combat, or combat support now and or later after they have a few weeks of PT, can we use them maybe as support units here on base or do we send them back home to help set up security details to assist the County Sheriffs,” Dan asks with a shrug?
I’ll sit down with the senior NCO’s and our training people later, and we will hash out a plan, one that works out for all of us Dan,” Col. Clark answered.

Today the Present
America is once again under attack; almost half of our current armed forces are overseas. The rest of the regular military plus the National Guard and the Reserves are less then a million in strength. So it’s time for you to step up, to help with the heavy lifting, remember its AmeriCan, not AmeriCan’t, together we can.
It is suspected by the media that, the Chinese have over four million soldiers alone in California. And maybe another half million up above Washington State, having landed in Vancouver British Columbia; plus they say they have over a million Allies scattered across the US, ready to aid them by making quick attacks on our power and supply lines. Or to attack the American people showing them that any attempt at resistance is futile. The Chinese say it would be in our best interest to surrender.
Why the government won’t give the true number of almost five million alone in California I don’t understand, maybe so as not to frighten the children. Wake up, the people of this country are adults they can accept the truth and deal with it.

Some of the liberal socialist’s in congress agreed with the Chinese yesterday and said, ‘America must surrender it will save lives,’ are those people TRAITORS, who will sell out our children’s future because they are moral cowards? Remember the Militia on flight 93 saved many of them back on 9/11. So we again must recognize that evil exists in the world, in many forms, and now in our own country, and you either fight it; or do nothing and let it rule over you. As for men of honor, the latter course is never an option.
As for the Kansas Militia we will never surrender nor will we ever give up, I don’t think America will either, we quote, from George Washington.

Our landings planned for Washington State were somehow diverted into Canada sir, we are looking for the saboteurs, and we will find them in the next few days. Even with this set back the Northern Army is advancing south toward the border, they should reach the northern part of Seattle by tomorrow.”
Xo nodded his head; he knew that even the best plans are subject to human error.
The two beachheads in California have linked up according to plan and both are advancing. On that northern front the X Army ‘s 25th Corp has by now taken Sacramento. The 19th Corp has rolled into the cities of Willits, Clearlake, Williams and Colusa, there was no organized opposition. Other unit’s moved into Yuba City at dawn, then after setting up a secure base there they will prepare for their next advances. It is too bad that we didn’t send 10 million men to that front; we had expected a lot more resistance and hard fighting from the Americans there. Oh well, a missed chance on our part to end this war fast. ”
Xo smiled as he nodded his head again and the briefing continued.
In Southern California the American Marines and US Army are putting up more resistance, they can slow us down for a few days but they aren’t strong enough to stop us. The whole of California will be secured according to the time table.”
He pauses for a second then continued, “Here on the eastern coast our missile bombardment of Taiwan is falling behind schedule Sir; the Americans have three maybe four submarines off of our coast and with their satellites overhead, when two of our launchers move position and start to set up to fire, a missile from one of these subs destroys at least one of them before we can complete a count down.”
We knew the risks, continue the bombardment, the Americans have only so many conventional warheads per submarine, we take loses for now but soon they will have only nuclear warheads left and then they will be forced to stop firing. They will not cross that line, not with our Armies in California,” Xo stated.
As expected the Japanese Self defense force, and the Taiwan Navy are helping them, we will lose most of our first line missile forces before they run out of cruise missiles. Where are our submarines why haven’t they destroyed the Americans?” The Army General in charge of the missile attack demanded looking across the table with anger at his Navy counterpart
Admiral Ju answered back with some anger in his voice, “In war General Tong you must expect casualties, if we drop below three hundred launchers, have the next wave move forward and start firing. That is why Xo gave you a total of 1,000 systems just for attacking Taiwan. This war is one of manpower and technology combined, we have more men and more equipment ready then they do, and every one of our men and every bit of our equipment is as good as any the west has, we will win because we have more of everything ready to go to war. We win by using numbers. In a fist fight one must expect to have your nose bloodied, it’s the same as war.” Ju thought why do I have to explain this, as a Combat veteran and Army General, Tong should know this. Xo should have replaced the entire top ranking military officers that were not his men; too much of the easy life under the Communists and the promotion of unfit leaders gives us whiners and twits like this. We are seeing that weak hesitation now, first in America and now here in China too.
As far as our submarines go, we have lost sixteen of them in just three days of this war, that would be the equivalent of you losing sixteen division in the same amount of time. My men are pressing forward no matter what the loses,. The Americans killer subs are the best, even the Russians said so years ago, but we will keep up our hunt and soon force them away from our shores, and we will win in the long run, don’t question that fact General, we will do our job you just do yours. Keeping pushing forward your replacements as they are needed to keep up the pressure, and Taiwan will fold.”
I would like to think that this part of our overall plan would work but I have my doubts!” As General Tong continued to voice his doubts, “The missiles that our enemy launch against us are not being shot down, by the Navy or our air defense units.”
They are stealth type cruise missiles and we get no radar signatures, they will soon run out of these new missiles and will then have to use the older ones,” Ju retorted. “When that happens we can at least attempt to shoot them down. Or at least know the general area they are headed to and warn our crews.”
Gen Tong unfazed continued voicing his skepticism, “To make matters worse the converted American Trident submarine the Michigan has left their Bangor Washington base and headed west towards China. I do not know the speed that it can travel at but if it joins the USS Ohio, another one of their Trident submarine that was converted and is suspected to be somewhere to the north of Taiwan, we are in for big trouble as each sub contain 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles. Just between those two American submarines and the Japanese Navy they can destroy over two-thirds of our launchers, without being re-supplied. In this war of irritation as you described it we might not have the upper hand here to…”
We will keep up the pressure on the rebellious province of Taiwan,” Ju said irritated, “we are hitting their cities with HE only so far and the population is terrorized, they are wondering and waiting for when the first of our Chemical or Biological warheads will land. Just the waiting helps us and terrorizes them, they are afraid that the next missile will bring more death; they are not a hard people, they are unable to withstand too much anticipation. They are afraid of us and we will use that fear to win, in a week, two at the most they will beg for peace and an end to the missile bombardment. Their own peoples fear will force that puppet government into surrender, then we will be able to land our troops with out any opposition to speak of.”
I hope you are correct Admiral and that their fear will grow,” General Tong said. What he didn’t say was ‘if we don’t use a Chemical or Biological warhead we might not see them fear us that much?’

They are now broadcasting live from the UN, the time is 9:50 A.M Eastern standard time, he is now directly addressing the UN General Assemble in an unannounced visit that caught all of us in the media by surprise. Do we have a live feed now good, we join him in mid-speech.”
“…of September at a few minuets past midnight, Pacific Standard Time, the forces of the Khan and his allies from the Jihad Army and with the support of local traitors, launched a deliberate, unprovoked, per-meditated surprise attack not only on American and our allies armed forces worldwide but also upon the continental US as well. We are witnessing the dawn of a new and terrible Axis. “Civilians in the way of these invading forces are being massacred by the thousands in clear disregard of every UN and international treaty. The American Ambassador spoke to this body on Saturday and asked for a resolution in condemning these cowardly surprise attacks. Again showing your true nature as nothing but a loathsome collection of lackeys, selfish money grubbers, with you hands out and the blood of innocents up to your elbows. The blood of either your own oppressed people, or now the blood of refugees attempting to escape this expanding carnage of war.”
The assembly was stunned by the President’s words, because just last week he had praised them as the only way to achieve world peace.
If you would just for once stop being selfish, and instead think of the type of world you want to leave to your children? You wouldn’t have voted as the majority of you did yesterday, and I wouldn’t be here today addressing you now.” There were murmurs of disapproval voiced by a few of the delegates, they didn’t like the tone of his voice, but the President continued with out pausing.
The United States of America, my nation, has offered you a hand countless times to improve your people’s lives, only asking for all of us to live in peace.”
While most of you, the world's hat-in-hand dictators and tyrants have mocked the United States and our ideals, you have voted against us on almost every occasion just for spite. Yet you have always been ready to line your pockets with another handout from the American taxpayer. All the while so you can hide the money in some offshore bank account, safe from your citizens needs.” The President paused to take a sip of water ignoring the grumbling of the delegates.
Most of you represent countries that will never understand why the United States is the greatest nation on Earth. You can’t see the reason even when it’s right in front of you, as you live among a free people.”
Let me remind you, the United States is the greatest nation on earth because we do not walk away, we will not bend to evil to save our own skin. Indeed, we will fight, not just to save ourselves, but to save civilization itself, even if some of our allies sit on their hands and act as if this war doesn’t affect them.”
You thought I would be a spineless leftist in the White House and would dismantle the greatest force for peace the world has ever seen, the US military. That we would bow down at every threat, and appease this body. Some people in European are the main appeasers of terrorism; France had a rude wake up call in the last few years with their cities burning, as they at first did nothing, they had hoped once more that they would no longer be reminded of their sheer incompetence. For those of you who have forgotten history I refer to Neville Chamberlain’s speech ‘Peace in our Time’. Let me remind you what Winston Churchill said afterward to Chamberlain: ‘You had the choice between war and shame. You chose shame and you will get war anyway,’ and Mr. Churchill was proven right.”
Before I became President, the west was at war with a ruthless enemy determined to destroy our way of life. That enemy has now become the Jihad Army, operating from bases in Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Pakistani and other mid-east countries. They have now joined forces with the new Imperial Government of China under the Khan, their aim is clear, to rule the world, pure and simple. This is a repeat of the 1930’s again, because a new Axis has arisen, and you the members of the UN are doing the same as the League of Nations did before you. Nothing!”
Before midnight Friday, China and the Militant Islamic Radicals used the words peace, trade and our so called misunderstanding of their beliefs to loll the west into endless talks and countless acts of appeasement, all the while preparing for war.
The exact same tactics the Fascists used leading up to World War II. And yesterday your votes continued to use these same tactics to blame the countries that are forced to defend themselves and the world from a new threat. And yesterday with the majority’s vote in this body, labeling the United States as the aggressor, mocking the ideals this world body was originally founded on, was for me the final insult.”
I say to you the representatives of your governments, you who have now chosen shame over freedom, and you will still have war. Every nation that voted against the United States yesterday is being deliberately disingenuous; your vote said it’s OK to use force to attempt to kill freedom.”

Because the something you won’t let your people have, is FREEDOM, because then YOU the self-anointed elite wouldn’t be so self-important. If you really believed in freedom and would act for it, not just talk about it, most of you in those self ruled governments would be out of a job, and out of the business of controlling your people’s lives.”

Was it because the United States would dare to honor a treaty, to help defend a free allied country, and now when we are forced to stand up and defend ourselves from attack. You decide to condemn people who are defending themselves, and let the aggressor continue their murderous attacks with out saying a word. Just as you have always condemned Israel for defending its people.”
When all hell breaks loose in your so-called court of world opinion then and only then do you act. And what is your action, you dare to censure the innocent people for fighting back. All of your votes bought and paid for with cheep labor and bribes from China, bribes you sold your vote and sole for.”

The founding documents for this institution venerate justice and human rights, today it has become the bully dominated by a bloc of states, most of whose governments routinely pervert justice and violate basic human rights. This body gave up its quest for world peace a long time ago.”
Today it promotes cynicism, hypocrisy, bigotry, sexual exploitation of the weak -- these are the standards put forward by the UN as proclaimed Sunday by you labeling the United States as the aggressor.”
The free peoples of the world, and those in your own countries who want and desire to breathe free air, deserve better.”
Something big was about to happen as the Secret Service detail with the President drew closer to him with their weapons drawn and at the ready. Scattered throughout the General Assemble chamber groups of other agents stood up and scanned the world’s ambassador’s looking for any threat. The few-armed UN guards that were present had an agent on either side of them disarming them to make sure they did nothing.
I say again Damn You, for your vote yesterday, when this war is over and the free people of the world win, there will be a reckoning. And you the ones who set in positions of power that could have stopped this war from starting, will be brought to justice.” The murmurs that had started as the president began his scold was becoming louder, voices were raised in displeasure as they weren’t use to being talked to this way, by this cowboy.
The president ignored the outburst and continued, “With that said, I have one last statement to make and it is the reason I am here today, so my critics here in America and some among you couldn’t say I was a coward in not coming to addressing you face-to-face.”
In a clear and strong voice the president delivered the broadside, “I the President of the United States of America, withdraw my country from all association with the world body known as the United Nations”
Any obligations or treaties to such body or its agencies, are now null and void. Any and all treaties we signed as a member state are nullified effective immediately, the American Congress I’m sure will concur and vote to pass the necessary legislation. Effectively immediately, not one red cent of the American taxpayer’s hard earned money will be paid to support the UN, any debts owed by the US are voided, we will not pay and continue to see our money wasted. Yesterday I ordered all American forces serving with the UN to leave their post and report to the nearest American counsel or base. The same with all of our people in supporting logistical roles, we the American people are finished working with the UN period.”
The assembled representatives of the world body were instantly still, had they heard it right. Was the United States quitting the game and taking the ball home with them? If some one had dropped a pin it would have sounded like thunder, the room was that quiet.
The Presidents next statement changed that, “I now order this building closed, the organization know as the United Nations and all of its agencies are to leave American soil TODAY, you have until noon to close your offices here in this building, and to pack everything that you wish to take with you. The U.N. staff has until midnight tonight to pack everything they will need and to make the necessary arraignments to leave the United States, theirs and your destination is of your own choosing.”
The out burst of profanity and cries of ‘you can’t do this’, and ‘typical American cowboy,” in the many languages was deafening.
The President again ignored the outburst and continued talking into the microphone, “As of this moment moving boxes are being delivered to your offices and your staffs are being informed of my order.” The commotion didn’t seem to be dying down as he continued, “Within two hours you will be escorted, by force if necessary from this building. There is an MP battalion of the New York National Guard waiting out side to enforce that order. I can insure you it will be enforced with added enthusiasm if you choose not to leave peacefully.”
Those country representatives who voted in favor of the Chinese Government aggression have until twelve midnight, local time, to board a commercial flight and depart the United States with their complete staff. All of their consulate offices in the various cities scattered across the United States will close and those people will be on board an international departure flight again by midnight our time. Any one who violates this order will be stripped of their diplomatic immunity at that time, and arrested. If you choose to resist, that is a risk of your own choosing, our good police officers will meet force with force if necessary.”
Our friends and Allies who voted with the United states to condemn China are welcome to stay and are exempt from my orders and time lines to leave. I do ask you to move all of your people and office materials out of this building and to stay in your respective missions.”
The US State Department will get back with you later today to set up a new organization of nations, one that is dedicated to the freedom of individuals, and the ideals of democracy, if you’ll join us.”
As for the rest of you, my predecessor said it so well, you are either with us or against us, and your vote Sundayl let the American people know where you stand on the issue of good verses evil. Your vote was your decision now live with it. On many occasions you have called the American people and several former Presidents cowboys, and used it as a slur; well I’ll use a cowboy term you can understand. You have until high-noon to clear out.” All of the delegates look at the clocks on there desks and saw the time was 09:59.
The clock is ticking,” the President said in finishing as the Secret Service Agents closed around and escorted him out of the door behind the podium. The other agents in the Assemble hall drew together in larger groups and left by the various exits around the room.
The commotion and anger that was directed at The President continued for several more minuets by many of the delegates. But their numbers were quickly diminishing as they realized he had meant every word he said, and with just two hours, it wouldn’t be enough time to pack up their luxurious offices and leave.

Shortly after the President stunned the world with his address to the UN, his get out of Dodge speech, he received support from an unlikely source. From the headlines of a Moscow newspaper,
The West should unite with Russia against the Islamic radicals and illegal Chinese immigrants and their expansionist plans. Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the flamboyant Russian ultra-nationalist said.’
The firebrand politician, who was attempting a political comeback in Russia, gave warning that if the former Cold War enemies did not form an alliance they would be overrun.

The Russian government woke up to that cold reality five days later, when three massive Chinese Armies numbering in the millions invaded at several strategic points along the mostly unmanned and under guarded border it shared with them. Two other Armies invaded two of its former states, now the independent countries of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan both rich in minerals and oil.
At the same time an Army of the Jihad Islamic radicals attacked from the south into the Caucasus region to assist the minority Islamic people in the area to take over of the several states there.
It was a repeat of history from 60 years ago, another lesson forgotten. Another mutual non-aggression promise voided by invading armies and the death of millions of Russian civilians to be repeated all over again.
The name the Chinese gave to this part of their war plan was ‘Hankuang’, or Chinese Glory.

I don't know about you Peter, but I was really impressed,” Steven said, almost gloatingly to their radio listeners, “that address by the President should set his critics back by a step or two. Talk about courage in facing down the UN. His approval rating ought to take a big jump after this, don't you think?”
Peter was reading another alert on his computer monitor and didn't answer.
So Steven continued with his opinionated liberal rant, “No arm twisting there folks, the President was able to get all of the conservatives in Congress to back his Deceleration of War, now a unified nation can show these invaders what it means to attack the United States.”

Looking across at Peter who has turned ghostly white he asks, “Whats wrong Peter you look ill?”
With out looking up Peter says, “I just got a news flash from a friend in Pennsylvania, The US Army War College auditorium in Carlislie has been leveled by a suicide bomb or bombers at nine this morning. Killing the entire class of 957 plus most of the staffing officers for the school. We haven't received that news due to a Presidential order squashing that information.” He then demanded from his friend, “What do you think of that!”
Before Steven can answer, Peter gets another e-mail notice this time from his mother. Quickly reading it he say's, “Those dirty rotten son's of bitches, they are censoring all most all of the news across the nation, with the exception of the fighting in California. Crap, crap, crap; my brother is dead, he was killed at about the same time 8:15 this morning at the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth Kansas along with most of his fellow class members, when they were being briefed of the news from California. Again by a suicide squad that had infiltrated the base, Mom doesn't know how many were killed there but she writes it's most of his class. I think he said that was close to 600 or so officers?”
You must be mistaken Peter, the White House wouldn't censor the news, your mother has to be wrong........

Haskim turned off the radio as he chuckles to himself, 'We are lucky, these fools that run this Government are helping his squads to achieve their goals. The Chinese are past masters of the propaganda war; still it was strange that they hadn’t stopped the local broadcast news coverage showing their advance, maybe it was to shock the Americans into inaction and force them to surrender to fate? By showing that the Chinese forces were unstoppable, thus causing fear in the weak kneaded and lose of resolve by others who might resist them. The live news coverage was a gold mine of intelligence for the American Military, helping them to extract small units cut off or in danger of being enveloped. Still the country was in grave danger and giving up land for the time necessary to marshal our forces; that wasn’t a popular decision, but a necessary one.

The news was continuous coming from the two invasion sites, showing the flight of civilians from the many combat zones, fleeing the advancing Chinese soldiers, and their murderous allies.
As the talking head had announced, ‘Now a new flag has been added to the side of the invaders, it is seen flying over several camps in the LA area, it’s a black flag with two crossed swords with white Arabic letters. It represents the Islamic flag of war, known as the Ar-Raya and it is meant to symbolize the jihad, or holy war. This large militant Islamic army is full of murderous, vengeful mujahedin, now here in America in force. And they have started to kill anyone they wish to, for no reason. The militants don't just want to destroy places, things and people dear to us, they want to destroy us all and convert any who might survive. Ham radio operators in the invaded areas report the rounding up of the homeless and drug users and their execution by the hundreds. These reports are unconfirmed and should be considered as rumors until an official source gives us the true facts.’
The bias from the MSM was obvious for anyone who reported on any news outside of their sight.
Almost as an after thought the TV announcers, would air information from the State and Federal governments to stay calm and avoid panic. And asking the people outside of the areas under attack to assist any people who were fleeing the fighting but to stay calm.
Yeah right, stay calm with murder on an unprecedented scale going on here in the USA.

I had tried to forgotten the horrors of battle up close. Something, I had prayed hard for, to never see again.
Long ago, I had my baptism to modern warfare, the searing pain from wounds and the deep loss and sorrow for dead friends. But this time I have no choice, I must do it all again, and I ask you with out hesitation to join me, so that our children can live in a Free Land ,To help defend the life, liberty and security of America. I know you will join me, because we all know it is far better to fight and die for freedom then to live as slaves.
Oh how I wish I could have spared you my fellow patriots, from seeing what the mouth of hell looks like. Yet it is here now; that gate to hell has been opened wide in our country, Americans are dying as I write this, defending their homes and buying us time, before it is over many more of us will die. If I am to be one among the dead let it be said I died fighting for Freedom, a man could not be awarded any higher honor.’

Wednesday morning 06:00 Brigade Command and Staff meeting
OK everyone as you know we are close to our full strength of 7,500 men and women, we only need about a dozen specialist in communication and several people with the needed language skills and we will be set. With the arrival yesterday of the FN’s, M79’s grenade launchers, the 1919’s and the MAG’s from South Africa, opps sorry that was the Rhodesian term for the M240 machine-gun. With these weapons that Buck purchased from the South African government we have most of our small arms requirement very well satisfied. These first planeloads give us enough small arms to equip another six plus Brigade size units. Since I’m an optimist, and we got these weapons, now with some hard work we should start to look a little less like an organized mob and more like a unit, with standard issue rifle’s.”
I mentioned that we have enough equipment for several additional Brigades, because the 2nd Militia Brigade has just started fleshing out. They have two battalions forming up right now and two more that will arrive soon, one from Texas and the other from Louisiana, their advance teams will be arriving here today, and as more armor becomes available each of the new brigades will have a heavy battalion too.”
The Governor called late yesterday and requested me to provide an Officer to be the 2nd Brigade Commander. I anticipated this request a few day ago and mentioned this to General Greene and suggested a man, he told me yesterday that the Army would have no problem allowing our man to fill this slot.”
The man I selected was Lt. Col Stoddard to fill that position, and that was after discussing it over with several other of our senior members, that’s the reason why he’s not present today. He is busy right now interviewing the people for leadership positions in the two new battalions he is forming, and for his HQ people and assessing the quality of manpower there. He plans to set up a skeleton staff and wait for the two out of state units to arrive before he asks us to provide a few more people. He plans to mirror us in size and in our TO&E, that’s table of organization and equipment.”
I want everyone here to know that making this choice for their commander was not an easy decision on my part. To be perfectly honest I don’t want to loose another good man, especially one who has just started getting his battalion organized and up to 100% strength, but the Governors request is an order and one that we have to fill.”
As for the XO of the 2nd Brigade the Governor is going to consult with the other two states and they will together select a National Guard Lt. Col to be the brigade Executive Officer.”
To take over Red’s spot, Major Cunningham has been promoted to the position of Lt. Col. he’s now the 4th Battalion’s CO. and will have to make the adjustments within his command on other promotions as Col. Stoddard did ask to take four men with him. The Governor told us that they will make sure the state Adjutant handles all of the necessary paperwork to promote our people to the rank their new positions require.”
I do hope that we won’t have to provide any more people to the other following units, as that will slow down our ability to get the first brigade combat ready. But I want every one of you to understand that we will assist Red and the following Brigades in any way we can. We have to stay flexible and adapt, that is why I insisted all these years that each man be trained to do the job of the man over him. As we grow we must keep learning, only then will we be successful.”
Now I want you to know that we have a long way to go before we are a combat ready Brigade, not just in our physical conditioning and tactics, but also in thinking and acting. You the officers and NCOs by your leadership example are going to make this unit something to be proud of. I want all of you to be at least a page ahead of your people in training, so study the manuals ahead of time, then ask questions, especially if you don’t know. The last thing I want to see or hear from any of you is, I don’t know when asked a question; if you are leading the class then you need to know. Now there will be times when a question is asked and you won’t have the answer. Find that answer immediately and then get back to your people, they are looking up to you and will follow you, if you lead.”
An officer in the back stood up, was recognized and asked, “Sir in our brigade organization and equipment tables I don’t see any mention of the Armor Battalion, can I ask why?”
For now we have kept them off the T.O. &E. on purpose, and Col. Stoddard will do the same with his Brigade. Our reasoning is simple, we know we have spies on and off post watching and listening to what is happening here, who knows with all of the new people joining maybe even one or two spies will be within the ranks. It might not seem like a well-kept secret but that just might be our ace up the sleeve later when we really need it.”
Dan picked up a small book about an inch thick of 3x5 inch laminated cards and held it up for all to see. “In my hand I am holding an Aide Me-moire, by the end of today every leader will have one, by the end of the week every man and women in the unit will have one. From then on every man or women who joins the militia will be issued one. To but it simple, it is a cheat sheet, a reminder of how to make a SITREP, (situation report) to conduct patrols and give operation orders. Set up guard duties, the size of an area needed to land a helicopter, how to call in close air support or artillery fire support. A reminder on basic first aid, how to set up an ambush, an OP, the distances between claymore mines, basic map reading and way finding. There is a lot more in here then I’ve listed, and by the end of the week I want everyone present very familiar with this little book, it’s an aid to help you. Use it to check your order procedures, use it as a checklist in all that you do. Use it to keep from making any mistakes, mistakes that later will cost lives. If we do our job right every time, we can and will keep the mistakes to the bare minimum.”
On cue Sergeant Little stood up to be recognized, Dan asked, “Yes Sgt Little?”
Sir I would like to address everyone present, I have something very important to say!”
You have the floor Sergeant,” Dan said with a smile as the CSM had already informed him of what the Sgt was going to say.
Thank you sir, almost everyone here knows that I am a full bloodied Comanche, a tribe of people that your great grandfathers, the American people conquered and then made a part of your nation. Since that time it has become our nation too, one that our people have grown to respect, as we are all brothers, we are all proud Americans. Years ago my people were a warrior people who defeated all surrounding tribes. My people were once known as, ‘Lords of the South Plains,’ we drove out all who lived in our territory including the Apache. We held our own for over three hundred years against the white men the Mexicans, until the Americans came and then we lost, and because of that I’m an American. A warrior of the American nation, I am proud of that distinction, I was proud to be allowed to join you as a member of the Militia, and now I’m given a chance to fight for my nation.”
By the tone in his voice everyone could tell that Sgt. Little was serious and speaking from his heart.
Since Saturday I have called my father every day and talked to him, he is a Vietnam Veteran and in poor health, otherwise he would be here today helping us get to ready. We have talked about our roles we must both take, I have asked him for advice and for help and after he had talked to several of our Elders, they said it is not just fitting but my duty also as a Warrior people to adopt children of the people who conquered us. To give them the warrior code, to pass it on with pride. So I have made up my mind to adopt all of our militia people, all present and the new ones we will be training, so that we are all know as proud Comanche Warriors, American Warriors.”
I have copies of our history and articles for everyone to read. They tell what it means to have a warrior’s pride, the traits of self-control, of self-reliance, duty and honor for our nation. Of the necessity to be strong, independent, willing to stand for what is right to correct wrongs, and to be dedicated to serving all of the people. We cannot help others unless we are strong, you cannot be generous without strength. These are the traditions of a true Warrior of the Comanche people; they have long been the traditions of the American Militia. These Comanche traditions are real; my ancestors gave them to me, by adopting you I am passing them on, another role of the Warrior, insuring tradition is remembered.”
The old Comanche’s drove out all who encroached on our lands, and to do so again we will need many warriors, as it will be a very long war. Whom among you will be the first to stand and be adopted into the Comanche nation?”
Dan without hesitation stood up and was quickly followed by all of the members of the Militia’ Sgt Little smiled and said, “Welcome to our tribe.”
Sergeant Major Wolf who had stood up with everyone else said loudly, “Eh, esehem.” Then in English, “Yes, very good.”
Sgt. Hermes whooped, “Hieeeee,” Then in a normal voice, “Heehe’e, Konianutqio, epeva’e, nomenoneche’se,” then said to those standing around him, “in Cheyenne that means yes, Wolf Warriors, that’s good, alright lets do it.” As he hit his left fist into his right hand to emphasize his enthusiastic support for the idea, thinking ‘just what America needs a strong unapologetic warrior model to follow.’ Smiling and then he say’s to the men around him, “it is good to be known as Wolf Warriors as they are brothers to the Dog Soldiers society, my fellow braves.”
Dan standing to one side was felling a deep sense of pride inside, and started clapping his hands and was soon joined by everyone else, this was something they would come to understand later, a true pride in being made a member of a warrior tribe. Only much later would another benefit become apparent, a mystique that Hollywood had already shown the world.
When the clapping stopped Dan said, “Thank you for the honor of having us as members in your tribe Sgt. Little. OK with that said, please everyone take a seat. Now onto the training schedules my fellow braves….”

Later that morning,
Dan I got some really good stuff besides the first tanks I flew in with last night,” Mike says with a huge grin on his face, “I was also able to pick up six M134d 7.62 Miniguns and another nine quad fifty mounts. Ya think we can use them?”
Dan smiled, “What a question, yeah I can see a use for the miniguns, say we put two in a couple of the Huey’s, and the other four are vehicle mounted. They will add one hell of a punch to an ambush or as a defensive weapon, same with the quads but those need to be updated and mounted on a solid platform. Ma Duce, when she speaks everyone listens, and when she sings in quartet she gets nothing but respect. My Uncle was the gunner on a quad during Korea and they were mounted on a half track, what do you propose mounting them on, one of the 6x6 APC’s?”
Not sure, as you suggested they will need a platform that is wide and stable with a good power-to-weight ratio; wish I had a dozen of the Russians BMP-3’s.”
If wishes were chocolates we would have no teeth,” Dan said with a laugh.
I’ll bet that was a saying your grandmother told you as a little boy,” Mike laughed too.
You got that right,” Dan retorted, “hey wasn’t one of the tracks you have in the museum an Alvis Stormer APC?”
Yes, but we have only have the one and we need a dozen or more and a source of spare parts.”
I remember reading in Jane’s that the Diesel Division of Canadian GM makes them, during Desert storm they or the British Company had provided an order for several dozen with a flat bed. The regular APC’s are manufactured up in Ontario, I’m sure the US Gov could get us a couple of dozen?”
Mike smiled as he agreed, “It’s worth a try Indonesia had forty or so on the market last year, but they only sold a little less then half of them when they didn’t get the bid they wanted, to bad I didn’t buy them then, oh well. I’ll make some phone calls to a few congress critters I know, let their staff do some work for us,” as he wrote some notes down.
Just after we met last spring one of my fabricators took apart the quad mount we were using for spares, and then rebuilt it with newer off the shelf parts. It’s lighter by two hundred pounds; he got rid of the old cast iron motor and used a large chain saw two cylinder motor mounted directly to a new hydraulics pump. This gives us faster turn and elevation control; he also added two large power assisted ammo drums for the lower guns with 800 ready rounds for each. A day-night thermal sight that can be used in fog or low cloud conditions. And four pneumatic automatic cocking arms, if you have a gun misfire and it stops shooting the sensor on that weapon will be activated and then automatically re-cock it.”
Dan smiled as he said in jest, “You gave him a bonus didn’t you?”
Of course, but that’s why Buck and I hired him in the first place, you know we are going to need as much ingenuity as we can get, and a little luck to win this war. Just like our Fathers displayed back during World War Two.”
Dan nodded his head in agreement then said, “I see from your list here that you were able to buy spare parts for the M41’s, drive sprockets, tracks and a whole lot of small things needed in the turrets. How long before our mechanics and your technical team can have these vehicles updated with the new engines and transmissions, the radios, night vision and the other improvements you have added to your original vehicles?”
Right now they are stripping the first three vehicles down to the bare bones. After that they will be steam cleaned then we cut and weld the hull and reshape them to hold the new engine and transmission unit as we then weld on the brackets underneath for the belly plates, and on top to hold the new frontal armor. All of the new brackets will be added inside for the new radios and intercom system then they will have the interiors painted marine enamel white, using one-hundred twenty degree low speed air jets they will be dry and as hard as a rock by 10PM tonight, the few armor Crews we have so far are pitching in and the rest of the vehicles should be that far along by tomorrow afternoon. Then we will have the new wiring harness installed, we only have six diesels engines and automatic transmissions on hand and they will be installed no later then Friday. After the new power train is installed and the turret is placed back on to the hull the external painting is done on each one as they are finished up. This morning my chief mechanic placed an order for thirty more power packs and tranies, the factory said they would ship half of them today, we expect them to arrive tomorrow afternoon and the rest next week. The last thing we install is the new sights, night vision and radios.”
You guys are moving fast.”
That’s the only way to move, we will let the crews have the first ones by Sunday afternoon, all of them will be finished by this time next week. That’s a good rate at rebuilding the twenty-three light tanks, and I think we will have the six dusters finished by the following Tuesday and that’s installing the new ammo drums and automatic belt loaders for the twin cannons.”
How many people are working for you guys on your toys and related equipment,” Dan asked amazed?
As of last Friday before the Chinese landings we had eight full time on pay role and two retired technical on call. By Saturday afternoon we jumped up to fourteen including the two men coming out of retirement and four more being transferred over from another department. On Monday we hired another six dozen to fill in as skilled laborers. They will have enough work to keep them busy for months. I also bought twenty-five more of the M113’s in various states of disrepair all over the country from other collectors and we are now picking them up, in the next day or two they will all be on the way here and with the spare parts coming available from the Army’s inventory those APC’s should be ready by the end of next month, maybe sooner if the parts arrive on time?”
That sounds good, I read your logistics report earlier, I like that all of the Troop mechanics have started training on the different models of the tanks from your and Bucks collection, the same here on the M60’A3’s with Dix’s people, they’re starting to learn their support role. Any chance on a few of the guys who are doing the refurbishing at your shop on joining up?”
Why a-head of you on that one, they all took the oath and when Buck gets back we will figure out a rank system and TO&E structure, most will stay at the Brigade support or a higher level, sort of like a D-log you know, the division logistics, and back up. Though five of them said they would like to be at either Troop or Squadron level, teaching and or getting their hands dirty, every one of them are good men. And the best organizational man I know is coming out of retirement, I’m planning to place him in charge of all of my logistical support for the various weapon and vehicles systems we are using and developing. He’s 66 years old and a former navy man; he spent over thirty years in the reserves and made it up to the rank of Captain. His last full time navy assignment was as a base depot commander back in 97’ he knows his stuff. That’s if you don’t have any objections?”
I’ll trust you on this one Mike,” Dan added with a smile.
Good, cause he’s making a few calls to some other people he knows that are also retired, they will help him set up a Logistics command HQ. I told him to keep it down to the bare minimum, a small HQ for now, he said it wouldn’t number over twenty, but the final number will depend on how big the Militia will grow.”
Dan wrote in his day planner, add to Militia training and support section ‘Logistical back up HQ 20 plus mechanics and techs.’ Then asking Mike, “He was a Navy Captain, that’s a Colonels rank in Army jargon, I think the Governor will accept that. General Greene at our 0800 briefing today laid out his ideas for twelve or more brigades of Militia to be trained, with at least four of those up and ready by the end of February next year. Who ever is picked to be their overall commander will be glad we set up a D-Log early on so he won’t have to play catch-up.”
The people who run the regular Army logistic supply chain aren’t going to be too happy with us, by-passing them and all,” Mike said with a smile.
Screw them,” Dan answered and as quickly excused himself, “sorry for the slip of my tongue. But there isn’t time to play the bureaucratic paper shuffle game. When the final cost is figured out it will show that our action was correct and that we saved money too.. Besides with the Army losing over 1400 officers on Monday in those two attacks, they are very short right now.”
Yes they are and it was a real shame to. As you said, they will save a lot of money too, I for one couldn’t run any of my businesses the way the Government does, I would have been broke and working for someone else long ago.” Mike nodded his head as he continued, “Oh yes almost forgot to mention, six of the pilots from T-oil are joining up, four are prior service the other two are civilians, and one of them speaks Farsi and Arabic, that’s going to come in handy, Cody has a list of another thirty pilots here in camp that are or were flight qualified. And close to another 90 men and women all prior service, who are aircrew trained, so the air wing will have plenty of pilots and maintenance people to get started. I’m sure we will see even more qualified people come over as more of the new recruits finish their paper work and list their skills.”
Mike continued “I have a former Air force Major acting as our lead pilot for now, he’s in the process of writing a real quick shake-n-bake officer course, for all of the pilots. When he’s finished he’s to coordinate it with your training people. The pilots will get the same tactics and weapons training as your basic rifleman, just in case they get shot down and have to fight and survive. He also wants to add a few courses on how they need to act as offices and gentleman, you know a little bit of military etiquette. He said its in case we have to work directly with any regular Army or National Guard units.”
Dan nodded his head saying, “I can see his point, I would hate for one of them to take a dressing down because they didn’t show the proper respect to some stuffed shirt.”
Mike chuckled as he added, “I do have one question, or I should say request, I would like for all of our pilots flight suit uniforms to be the same pattern as the BDU’s worn by the rest of the brigade. I don’t want them to think they are any better then the average trooper.”
Dan agreed, “I like that Mike, make it happen, we will do it just like the Marines, everyone has to be a rifleman first. Every officer has to know how to shoot very well, move tactical in a unit in the field, dig a foxhole, and last but not least communicate while on the ground. As for the woodland Nomax suits and helmets to fly in, again I’ll leave that for you to find or have them made up. If you talk to your former Air force officer buddy and look into when the AF flight line aircrews were issued Nomex BDU’s. Thanks I think,” Mike said with mock sarcasm, “I’m going to need some help then!”
I figured that you might, I suggest that you talk to one of the older Armor collectors that you guy's know, and to start working him in to replace you in the procurement slot full time.”

Good.” Dan then added, “I know that you and Buck have spent millions out of your own pockets these last few days, with out even a promise of being paid back, I hope…”
Mike interrupted Dan saying, “Sir. If we don’t have a free country our money means nothing. Hell the Chinese, North Koreans and their Iranian buddies tried there hardest these last few months to make the dollar completely worthless overseas. And to ease your concern don’t worry my financial team is keeping tract of what we spend and have alerted the people in the Defense Department to what we are doing. So when this gearing up is over we can see to the details about being paid back, can we leave it at that? OK.”
Dan said, “OK. Any thing else?”
Yes I also was able to purchase 2 M-8C .50 cal. spotting rifles, you know the ones that were attached to the 106mm recoil-less rifles.”
OK, but those take a special round that is shorter then the normal .50 caliber round.”
That’s right but I also picked up the last thirty rounds of ammo they had for them, my ammo tech man took one look and said he can make a die to reform the regular.50 rounds once we dissemble them and cut them down to size and then reload them with either SLAP, AP or Incendiary rounds. I would like to have some loaded with the Rufus exploding heads if the government will give us any?”
Mike we have at least two dozen .50 cal rifles in the Brigade already, I’m not sure that adding more fifties in an odd ball round is helping us there. Some of are guns are pretty heavy and slow on the reload. We might be better off trying to set a common standard weapon using regular Army ammo?”
That’s true, I took a look at the assortment of fifties our guys have last August at the range, we can keep the one shot and rear load models here for training. If it’s possible we should replace them all with a standard .50 cal rifle that take a magazine! I know of a company that can fill that bill, they have a bolt action rifle that comes with a scope, a bi-pod and weighs in at between eighteen and twenty pounds, a lot more portable then the two heaviest 29 pound single shot monsters a couple of the men have now.”
Dan smiles shacking his head, he knows he helped unload a couple of those beasts at the range one day. “Is it someone outside of the company the regular Army and Marines buy from cause they will be back logged for a least four months maybe even longer? We will need at least two-dozen of them right away, that’s twelve for each Brigade? That's a break down of two 50’s for each Battalion and two more at the Brigade level.”
Writing down Dan’s suggestion Mike said, “This manufacture and dealer I have dealt with in the past. I called them at home Sunday and he said he had sixteen in stock ready to go, and he will do a rush order in making up another batch, he said they would have the new one’s ready in three weeks. If you want, I’ll call him after our meeting and arraign for picking up what he has in stock now.”
Are they of good quality, and do they have chrome lined barrels,” Dan Asked?
Mike adds, “Yes on both questions, and for now each rifle will come with just one five round and two three round magazine, in a week or two his production will kick out all of the magazines we want. If I can suggest, the gunner and his number 2 man, their ready load will consist of three of the five round and two of the three round magazines. His number three man will carry two more of the five round magazines loaded, and with another twenty rounds in pouches as reloads. The forth man will carry a support machine-gun something like the Saw M249, and the fifth man is the team leader with the spotting scope, night vision etc.”
Your idea sounds good, talk to one of the .50 teams and see what they think. Now what was your idea for using the M-8’s?”
Mike shrugs his shoulders and states, “When I got them my thought was, we can add them to our scout cars especially the ferrets. We mount them on the right side of the turrets and cover them with a light armor skirt over the weapon. We run a feed from inside for the ammo and a simple optical sighting system. This would give them the ability to take on other light armored vehicles. They would still be a semi-auto weapon not like a full auto M-2 and if we want to go high tech we add to the optical a co-mounted thermal scope with a LCD panel inside for the commander. Then he would have a very stable, long-range sniper rifle with a good all weather sighting capability.”
Dan nodded his head in agreement that would give the old cars a nice extra sting, as he asked, “If I remember right the M-8’s have only a six round magazine don’t they?”
Most do, in Nam I remember seeing a couple of ten round one’s but those might have been made up by the guys using them. Not to worry we can make a drum to hold twenty rounds or even a belt powered flexible feed system like the miniguns, and feed them from a tray of 100 rounds. I’ll bounce both of those ideas off of my tech men,” Mike pauses for a second then thinking out loud says. “In three or four days they will have something ready to look at. And we can get a local machine shop to copy one of the modified M-8’s and start production, in a month they could be producing them in quantity, for us and the follow up units.”
OK but while we are making a new weapons system and to keep our ammo re-supply simpler can you have them made so they can use the normal 50. Cal round?”
Mike hits his forehead with his left hand as he says, “Duh, and that’s what were just talking about on having a standard round and weapon. That’s a lot better idea then remaking the ammo to fit a special weapon, it might take a day or two longer to make up a working model,” Mike smiles as he agreed. Then said “Some where in the shop we have a new turret we designed a few years ago for the ferrets, its lighter and made of stronger steel and it’s just a few inches wider too, if we add the fifty on the right side,” he pauses for a second thinking through this problem then says, “that would work out just fine. The man who designed it had an electrical elevation and traversing motor installed, but it still had the old manual override as a back up. The fifty cal he added had an extra fine controller that gave a one to five degree left or right and up or down adjustment. We took it to the range and after sighting it in at 2000 meters with match ammo it was dead on. I’m going to have one of the men dig it out make up some specs and then make several more turrets to mount onto some of the Ferrets.”
You know Buck also said the South Africans had hundreds of the old scout cars for sell, some for just a couple hundred apiece, I’ll call him up later and ask if he could pick up another 300 if that’s OK with you sir?”
I like that idea, if we were to add 30 of them per Brigade, six per each Battalion that would give a new meaning to long range sniping. These redesigned cars are going to need a new name, do you have any ideas,” Dan asked?
With a grin Mike said, “The Rattle Snake, its on the Militia flag and where the motto, Don’t Tread On Me comes from.”
With a big grin Dan agreed, “I like that, since it’s your project Mike it’s your call, Rattle Snakes they are, and these snakes will have a good and deadly long range bite. I do have one question, how are you two guys buying all of this stuff, with the dollar toasted overseas?”
Gold stocks and foreign accounts in the local currencies that we had outside the country, but you didn’t hear me say that and thanks on letting me name them, I better get busy so unless you have something else sir?”
Two last items Mike, the first is individual radios, I know you made over four thousand available in August for the brigade members to purchase, I remember you saying that your production run would be in the 10 or 15 thousand range. Do you still have any of the 6 or 11 thousand extras you made left in your inventory? If so we will need to ship them here and then change the control chip in all of them to let us use the military frequencies now too.”
Why ahead of you boss, when we designed the radios we planned for the off chance of being called up, so we won’t need to change the chip out, we just set up a program and down load the new information directly to each radio vie the USB port. As for the other 11 thousand radios, they are being shipped today from our storage in Alabama. The company’s plant up in Milwaukee has the specks for making more of the motherboards; it will take about a month to work up a second full shift of new people and to help clear out our present backlog. After that stand back, the third and fourth brigade and the following units will have their new radios on hand to train with and ready for deployment. What’s the second thing we need?”
Boots, most of our people have two good pairs on hand, but it’s the new people coming in that have me worried, the Army can’t provide us with any. What they have in inventory goes to their own people and their new recruits. We were told that it will take at least six to nine months to get their suppliers up to speed!”
I have a good friend he’s the CEO of Altama he does have a contract with the military, and his 3 plants make several million pair a year, they should have on hand several thousand pair of boots on hand. He’s also a damn good patriot and I’m sure he will be able to help us out, what pattern are we looking for?”
Dan stands up and points to the ones on his feet, “Ones like these that have a good Gore-Tex lining to keep them water resistance and a fair amount of insulation. But these cost over One-hundred dollars a pair, don’t know if the Army will want to pay that much?”
Mike smiled and answered, “When I joined last year that was to be the standard boot, I know a lot of the men have them. I think most of the men would be willing to pay the difference between what the army would pay, as these boots are still made in the USA.” Making a few last notes Mike laughs as he says, “I’ll call him first thing after we are finished, and see how much of a bulk order discount I can weasel out of him. He’ll come through, it might take a week or two to get in enough for the first Brigade, after that I know his company will supply enough for the second brigade before they are halfway through the training cycle. And as more units are formed they will be able to equip them as they start up.”
With a chuckle Dan said, “I knew there was a good reason I let you and Buck join us. Something about thinking ahead, or was it because you two had good friends or some nice toys to loan? Either way thanks Mike, and I really mean it when I say we wouldn’t be in as good a shape with out the two of you. One more worry though, what about components for the radios, didn’t you get most of that stuff from over seas suppliers?”
Yes unfortunately most of the stuff is manufactured overseas, but we still have two small factories here that produce a limited amount of all of the components that we use in them. They can almost double their output in two weeks by adding a few more people in a few key slots, and once new staff is hired and they gear up to three shifts, we can then double it again. If we have to we will set up another plant, that's if we can buy the machines to run it,” he paused for a second thinking. Then continued with, “I would hope to have it up and running in another two months or three at the most. I’m sure many other companies’ with local plants will be picking up the slack real soon. The money grubbers shipped a lot of jobs and factories over seas the last twenty years but there are still a lot of basic and high tech ones still around. It will take a little longer to make a lot of the industries that we will need to win this war. It might become a question of do we have enough right now to defeat this threat on our shores first?” Mike then smiled as he said, “And thanks for the complement I’ll pass it on to Buck, I need to go I have a lot of work to do” he then saluted turned and left.
Dan thought for a few seconds on how far America has slipped from being the world leading production dynamo it was back in the sixties and early seventies. He shakes his head and says, “Lucky for us that the Chinese didn’t wait a few more years before they attacked. If they had waited just a little longer we would be sunk before we could got started?”

Still it had been an uphill battle with just close to half of those offered a chance to join who did so, to see the light, to convert to the one true religion and be spared. Just one in every two men, but that still gave them almost 11,000 new recruits. He didn’t want to think about the mountains of dead cons they were leaving behind. So to justify this unpleasant task he had told himself it was a quick death, a lot better then starving. Still it just wasn’t something he cared to dwell on.

That depends on how fast you learn to recite the prayers and take to the recruit training, it ain’t that hard,” Clarence answered relieved.
